If you have locked into Blackdown’s Rinse.FM segment recently you will have no doubt noticed his excitement about a new nucleus of producers building low slung, heavily grime referenced beats in and around the 130bpm mark that exhibit the same dark, skeletal aesthetics that were ever present in an emergent Dubstep sound circa 2004.
At the core of this new wave of beatsmiths are Wen and Epoch, who have clashed heads from opposite corners of the globe to collaborate on Egyptian Avenue’s inaugural release, the imperious and sub-heavy mechanisms of ‘Hydraulics’, backed with Epoch’s own ‘Bass Mix’ interpretation featuring the probing vocals of LV favourite Joshua Idehen. Egyptian Avenue Records’ sole prerequisite is to release unconventional music; beats with roots entrenched deep within the sound of the underground bass community, focussing on finding fresh perspectives and captivating sub-laden sonic explorations.
The A side ‘Hydraulics’ is driven forward by guttural sub-frequency swells and drum patterns so sparse that the syntax and space in between the thudding kicks and stuttering snare whips are just as vital to the rhythmic swing as the percussion itself. Pitched down vocal snippets, dulled bongo rolls and sinister loops of grimy synth lines all help to build a raw and grainy track dynamic; an inherently rugged beat that ominously circles and darts around your conscious. Epoch twists up Hydraulics on the B side, with his Bass Mix sounding like a transmission from the outer realms of space. Josh Idehen’s cryptic narration adds a new dimension on top of the throbbing waves of low end, barrages of computerised bleeps and sporadic bursts of percussion to create a truly leftfield and unique riddim that will challenge any soundsystem’s capabilities.

Best thing to come out the murky underground for a while now. Out to Epoch and Wen, both absolutely killing it right now.
