recommend me some really well produced dubstep to reference

Post by gravity » Wed Jul 14, 2010 5:59 pm

so im looking for some new stuff to use as reference material with regards to mixdown, and tbh i dont really follow whats coming out that much so i dont really know what to look for. been meaning to start working on my mixes again cause im still not happy with what im churning out atm. previously ive been using stuff like reso - onslaught, but im not sure its really appropriate to what im doing any more. was using some eskmo bits, but again i dont think its really that appropriate. im after something quite maximal, not brostep, kinda dnb-esque basses and stuff - check the sig for an idea of what im doing.

any help would be wicked!

Pinch - Underwater Dancehall

Not exactly the soundset I think you're after but still pretty much sets the standard

kryptic minds would be a perfect example.

If you wanna check some dnb stuff for bass comparisons check out some stuff by spinline, hydro, naibu etc this has some very nice bass examples

cheers guys i'll have a listen to some of these suggestions.
@lp - i think kryptic minds is a bit too minimal mate. i know plenty of dnb i can reference tbh, would just bust out some noisia or some dom stuff init.

just checked them out - oddly enough the reso thing still seems the most appropriate. everything else thats been recommended is still far too minimal - which i have no problem with, but it seems a bit retarded to be referencing non-minimal stuff with a minimal track. cheers anyway though dudes, looks like im sticking with reso still.

waiting for the first guy who says "check the sig"

in the meantime, check the sig

bad joke, sorry. I think 2562- Flashback is incredibly well-produced in terms of technical production, and a really good example of how that technical ability can be used to make something more musical. i'd post a youtube vid, but that kinda defeats the purpose a little

Vex'd Cloud seed shit was pretty beautifully mixed...

If your comparing on a deep subby note you cant get wrong a>b 'in to DMZ bits...

Brostep transformers compare your shit to Downlink and Datsik

Aggro types compare to Trillbass/Old Self Similar Records too... oh... and Subvert has some tight mixdowns too.

IMO...

Ganja White Night and all of thier solo work, are some of the most beautifully engineered tunes in dubstep :? ... some people disaggree, but thier so maximal, progressive, well mixed and the sound designs are immense... So yeah...

I never use dubstep as a reference for mixing, not that there aren't great mixes out there, but I usually listen to Steely Dan's song "Aja." It's a little trick I learned from some studio engineers I happen to know. And even though I make more aggressive tunes then them, I still find that listening to the song before I touch the console gets my ears set. Even if you don't like the song, you can't help but admire the production IMO.

Not like the song? No heresy here please. IMO all those 70's albums sound way too good to compare dubstep to. Rumors by fleetwood mac, try and get that bass sound. :o
