How low is too low
I have sub bass 30-60 Hz is this too low? how do i get a higher frequency without having to play the note on a higher octave?

Re: How low is too low
Envelope the pitch so it first hits a few semitones up (like the fifth) then decays to the note you played? I believe someone will know how to explain that to you, my english sucks.

Re: How low is too low
When I do sub I like to keep it 50+ or else i can't hear it that well, and let's face it, I don't see my music being played on club systems any time soon.

I have a thread here discussing the track, and offering you the chance to remix it, more details in thread! See what you can come up with!

Re: How low is too low
I really need to know how to be able to get the freq up without changing it on the piano roll. it has a midrange part to it, and i was thinking about frequency splitting but im not sure how i would go about doing that.

Re: How low is too low
You can layer an octave above the original sub, or you could use some distortion/saturation to introduce higher harmonics.Lectric wrote:I have sub bass 30-60 Hz is this too low? how do i get a higher frequency without having to play the note on a higher octave?
The whole "how low is too low" question all depends on a few factors imo, what systems people are listening on, whats the style of music, ect. When I make ambient/drone I like some low end rumble, and go as low as I end up going, Just a few hz sometimes... For "bass music" I tend not to go lower than F, though I have Gone as low as D a few times, but only for one note every few bars. When I did that I thought to myself, if people hear it, there going to be like, "fuck that is low", and if they don't there brain is going to think, "fuck that was a cool pause". Win, Win

Re: How low is too low
Humans can hear as low as 20hz. Club systems should be able to play 20hz.
Re: How low is too low
Definitely not too low, but like 3za said, it depends on so many factors, just go with what you think sounds right!
Re: How low is too low
they'll never be played in clubs if you never make anything that can be played in a clubComfi wrote:When I do sub I like to keep it 50+ or else i can't hear it that well, and let's face it, I don't see my music being played on club systems any time soon.
i think everyone should make tunes with the biggest audience and best systems in mind, if one of your goals is to be there someday, that is.
Re: How low is too low
I've been doing some messing around with freq sweeps in various systems and this is what I've found:
43-44Hz (Low F) - Resonant in everything from shitty stock car stereo to a system with 2 12's in a ported box.
41Hz (Low E) - Same as F.
50-51Hz (Low G#) - A Better choice of sub bass for bangers if you mainly want it to hit in stock car stereos. Any system with subs will still hit it well but will cry out for that low 43 or 35. A Milli by Lil Wayne hits here and so does Tempered by Rustie and Joker.
59Hz (Low A#) - About as high as you want to get with sub bass imo. IMO. IMO. I'd only lay on this note for some short passages, take Gold Dust by Flux for example.
38-39Hz (Low D#) - This is just about the same as 43hz or 41hz, except most stock car speakers go dead after 40hz. This shit hit's hard with some subs though.
35Hz (Low C#) - Once you get this low you're mainly only looking at people with subs. Generally, cheaper more entry level subs hit down to around 35hz comfortably and then they start to die out. If you/the listener has some nice subs though, this will fucking KNOCK ALL YOUR SHIT UP.
55Hz (Low A) - Pretty much the same as 51hz.

Re: How low is too low
i miss my sub, i get down to d2 and my computer speaks start making weird rasping noises
Re: How low is too low
club systems go as low as 20-25hz, 30hz is quite loud, 40hz is banging on a club system. 50-60hz is what you can hear best in a car with some okay speakers.
id say your sub is sitting pretty. add some subtle distortion/saturation to introduce some harmonics possibly up into the 80hz range, but not too much, thats about where your kick will sit ish.

Re: How low is too low
keep it around 40-60hz generally, it's fine to go as low as 30hz, or higher than 60hz. but generally you'll want your hardest notes to hit at 40.
anything below 30hz is wasting headroom.
