starting your own label. what does it take?

what are the legal sides to starting a label and releasing tracks through it.
How can i copywrite my name and tunes if possible.?

Do what everyone else does and get the label paid for by the Prince's trust.

I lost count of the number of people who got grants to start 'labels' in the 90s. Nice little business plan to get some money.

considering how lazy we are and the lack of push we give or will ever give our tracks...they sell moderately well for us in our own ithinkmusic Digi store (see sig).

But we still allow other labels to release tunes of ours if they want to.

Sort out a good distribution, Sort out how you will manage the money, Have good music, put a business plan together and stick to it... It makes you do things when they need to be done and makes you feel like things are moving. Believe in what your doing! Have good music, register with PPL, Get help from people around you for things and pay them in beer! things that need considering are:

Graphics / Design
Press releases
Mastering (if you know someone who can do you a great job for a great price then thats a major overhead sorted)
Contracts.
Anyone you know that might run a label already.
Marketing

Marketing is easy on the internet but there are things that are a real pain in the ass somtimes that you need to do, keep hitting people up try not to be annoying tho! Respond to everyone who ever emails/PMs speaks to you, take the time out to be friendly and approachable and people will take the time out to listen to your music.

Most importantly tho has to be to have good music. And lots of it.
