Recommendations on studio monitors & sound system speake

I've just moved and I'm rebuilding my studio from scratch. My son decided to stick a screwdriver through the cone of one of my monitors in the last studio, so I decided it was time for a new pair.

I actually want 2 sets, 1 for mixing and 1 to listen to as a final mix, as a proper sound system. Dub & Roots is the order of the day, and I'm sharing the studio with a hip hop outfit, so we're going halves. I'm into the dirtier side of production, and whatever I do on the computer (intel iMac runing Logic pro and a G4 running Logic 4.8.1) will be run through an analogue desk for the crunch.

I've got around £300 to spend, and I want to get some serious bass on the sound system speakers, as the studio's in a basement, and I expect I might have a few spars round to feel the music rather than listen to it! I don't mind second hand as long as the sound is still OK. I'm in Dudley West Midlands, so if you have any for sale locally I'm interested.

My Tannoy Reveal Active's work nicely with my mid cab and 2x15 inch sub cabs. You might get the Tannoys for about £300. Or you could get 1 Mackie SRM450 even though its no nearfield monitor.However its twice as good as most speakers.Have fun shopping though .Peace.

I've got just little KRK Rokit 5s with a hi-fi sub and it's just glorious for production. Couldn't hope for anything more (well, Rokit 8s I guess)

I don't know what prices are like in the UK. Go for 8 inches tho, unless you've got a sub! Mackie HR824s? Prolly a bit outside of the price range.

300 quid for both pairs, or both of you are gonna pitch 300....

if its just 300 quid i'd say krk rokit5 or 6's, and maybe a sub... then you might have something left to get for mixing speakers.

Why not just monitor your on your reference monitors?

I do and it works great - they're very revealing. You can tell when you're on and when you're not.

yea i just got the RP8's and the sound great. I highly recomend them..

Of i was you, in that price range I'd go for Tapco (made by Mackie) or Events.

Both have a bit of Bass roll off, but to be honest I've tried both and they are both good/true monitors.

(i don't work for Dolphin BTW, always shop around for gear to get the best deal.

Think about gettin a separate sub for monitoring too. But you will do some fine shit with both of thse IMO.

Definately go for 8's tho if you are thinking of makin' Dubstep. Anything else will give you a feeble bass.

i've never heard the Rokit 8's above so I can't comment, but try all three IMO

For monitoring purposes I use these sexy little things



Wharfedale Diamond 8.1, probably around 80 quid now maybe cheaper but they're fucking superb. The 9.1 are self ampd I think, so if you get them you'll have more money for your soundsystem speakers
