Help and Tips about mixing Dubstep

Post by thomas » Fri Mar 02, 2007 5:55 pm

I’ve only been at this for about a month, and haven’t had much practice.

And I was wondering if anyone would take some time to listen to a mix I’ve done, maybe give a few pointers, or some general advice. I have read through all other threads about this, but either I’m not following the advice or finding it hard to change from Hip hop to a more dance type music.

I'm uploading, but don’t want to put out for everyone as it’s not something I’m happy with...obviously.

thanks in advance, i realise this is a big request and I don’t know if I have anything I can offer back apart from a big thank you and a decent conversation....

Tom

well, wheres the mix rudeboy? ive been where you are. man went from hip hop to drum and bass to grime to dubstep. i might be dating myself but i came up in an era where blends were the definition of good djing. hip hop djs dont blend anymore-its all slam mixes and scratches. no matter what kind of music im listening to nowadays, i always keep count in my head to see if i can mix it with dubstep. youd be surprised what works.
I AM NOT OK.

Yeh the upload cut off when my flatmate reset the router

ill upload it while im at work now, and PM you a link?

thanks

Yeh, i can blend and thats what i tend to do, but i always want to bring the next track at full volume, so they are both going together, then take the last one out slow. or just do that and then stop the first one all together, not sure how this sounds to other people so i will wait to see what you say.

I also dont fully understand a double drop, is this nessesary, ive tried to get one track at its second drop, and the next at the first drop and see how this works, but again its either not working right or sounds odd.

i personally never bring in the next track at full volume. it's always a risky venture for me. i find that bring the next track in at 2/3 volume and with the highs cut slightly and the bass cut significantly works well, but it really depends on the mixing situation and the tracks being payed. i don't really like to bring in a track with a extremely recognizable intro at a low volume. double drops are hard. they take alot of playing around with different traccks to find ones that work together. i personally like to improv my sets, so having a predetermined "set" is not usually my bag.

hope that helped...oh yeah, and drop it on the one!

I know theres a few obvious mistakes in this, i wouldnt normally make, but it still shows the way ive been doing it i supose. Ignore the horrible part where it goes out of time and i end up cutting the power while the track is still playing, ha.
