DUB WAR DUBSTEP HISTORY LESSON EDITION

flyer design by ashes57

First off, we have two exciting guests kicking off the night.

SOUTH3RN
The Texas dubsteppers have been at the forefront of the scene in the US, providing a steady supply of lush, emotive dubstep beats that will be pure meditation on the Love soundsystem.

DAVID LAST, whose broad range of styles have won him praise in the minimal techno, experimental, and reggae worlds, and have taken him around the world to perform. Expect a bass-heavy set of original dancefloor material exploring the boundaries of dancehall and dub.

then...

DUBSTEP HISTORY LESSON
JOE NICE, DAVE Q, AND MC JUAKALI take it back to the beginnning, as they revisit the most monumental tunes in dubstep's 6 year history. This will be an epic 4 hour set spanning the evolution of the sound. Most of these tunes have never been heard on a proper soundsystem in New York City, so don't miss this rare chance.

thats huge! it'll all be worth it, because this is probably the first time that these classics have ever been played on the right system in nyc.

anybody that's into early tempa and big apple records should bring their gym clothes, because it's going to get serious.

I've seen quite a few bits of discussion on What is and what is NOT dubstep, what the roots are, who the early players were and the transition from the Agent X socca flavas and dub influences of El B (Ghost) in UK Garage through The early Tempa years, to modern day "wobble N bass", The indian and african influences into Jamaican Dub, The name game ( Grime?, 8bar?, 2step?, sublow?, Dubstep? ), The lost producers (Goldspot Productions) and stateside events (Drive By- with The Wikked Crew, I can only account for the whereabouts of Idris Elba "MC IDRIS aka BIG DRIS" and that's only so long as he pops up on a movie or T.V screen)

Then there's that Joe Nice character who among the group of Garage Devotees on the 2step list became the champion of Dubstep and an educator of sorts while spreading the "gospel". Forces of Nature made it's way back into rotation in my player for a trip down memory lane and hopefully some of those tunes find their way into this "HISTORY" lesson as well.

Much can be said about the Garage and DnB refugees who are taking asylum in the world of Half Tempo beats. Like those who cite Biggie And Tupac as their point of entry into hip hop ( Missing the cold crush brothers and fantastic 5 "B-Boy" era of hiphop) some may find that the material that precedes today's musical definition of Dubstep surprisingly unfamiliar, particularly those whose point of entry leads in at Midnight Request Line. which seems to be a popular reference point for many. No matter, Rakim said it best, "it ain't where ya from it's where ya at", then again there's nothing wrong with knowing your history to get a better understanding of your NOW!
