Year, lots of good stuff going on in that - very techy. If it was me I'd drop the freq of the kick so its hits you in the balls and add another snare a bit lower down as well, in the chest as well as the face with the occasional reverb on it.

Glad you liked it and thanks for the suggestions. I like your combat analogy, maybe I'll give those ideas a try - we'll see! (Or maybe save them for the next track...)

Beef coming your way!

Post by muteqx » Fri Feb 08, 2008 7:45 pm

So I've been thinking about EFA's "heavier drums" suggestion, and I reckon it's definitely the way to go. The above MP3 can be considered a "teaser" version.

Who's up for a 320 with beefier drums?

Shout now to be ahead of the rest...

Thanks for the comments peeps, much appreciated! (Especially as this is my first tune posted here.)

Don't worry about the snares, I will be sorting it tonight.

I'm assuming the weakness mentioned is just down to the sound I've used? So if we had the same drum programming but with a beefier sound (and perhaps still some use of the original one for the occasional fill) would that be what you're looking for?

I'm also going to be doing EFA's suggestion of making the kick a fair bit heavier and deeper. (It's because I used to write DnB and always left quite a lot of space between the kicks and b-line, but I can see why that's not really necessary in dubstep, as there's already a fair bit more space in the mix anyway due to the lower BPM.)

Tron samples... well, I just had to! The bass I made on my Ion sounded so much like the noise the Tron Recognizers and Tanks made, it pretty much decided what the tune was going to be as soon as I'd patched it up!

320s coming your way when it's done! :)

Actually really love this. Only got halfway through so far, and I'm after a 320 for sure. Any chance?

Big thanks to all the appreciators!

Post by muteqx » Tue Feb 12, 2008 5:05 pm

Big thanks again to everyone who has been digging this one! I'm really glad my first tune here got such a great response - it's kinda blown me away, to be honest! Not least that this forum has so many sound, friendly people using it - the community vibe here is wicked! 8)

If anyone out there still wants a 320 MP3 or FLAC, both are now online and I'll gladly send you the download details if you PM me.

My next tune is already coming along well - it's very different to this one! If you like a bit of genuine brass section in a dubwise stylee, watch this space and check back sometime early next week... and that's all I'm saying for the moment!

The adjustments work well, sadly I had to take my studio down to move so missing the Subs on headphones, if you do anything else to it I'd suggest something more to announce the 1st drop, buildup or summat, look forward to the next.

I've been listening to this one for a day or so and just downloaded the latest version. I'm really liking the Tron vibe you have going on here. The mix is great, too -- so heavy but still clear. I guess I'd just second that a little tougher snare might be nice, but this is a great tune!

Hmmm... perhaps you have the wrong version?

Tougher than it is in the new mix? When did you download it?

Would you like a 320 that's definitely the new mix? (I have a feeling you may be listening to the previous version, though I could be wrong.)

Still, thanks for checking it out and I'm glad you like it! :D

(Next time, I'm going to mark my preview mixes better so everybody knows it's not the final version!)

Update: The filename gives the clue to if it's the old mix. If the file you have is called muteqx-game_grid_vbr192.mp3 then it's the older mix.

I most recently downloaded from this link: http://www.muteqx.com/audio/muteqx-game_grid-vbr128.mp3. So there's a hyphen between "grid" and "vbr", not an underscore. :-) I'm definitely interested in a 320, in any case!

Oh well, sounds like you do indeed have the final version.

Should I have made the drums harder still!?

Well, I'll bear that in mind. It's been a few days since I listened to the track, but it's absolutely finished as far as I'm concerned.

As a very wise friend of mine once said: "Improve between tracks, not in them."

...bar obviously finishing it off in the first place, but as far as I'm concerned this one is finished, and I'm very happy with it.

Still, I'm really grateful to everybody for all the feedback and enthusiasm. This has been one of my most positive tune releases ever, and I think this experience will finally pull me back from having not finished anything for well over a year.

The next one is coming along really well, and I intend to finish it this weekend! Looking forward to putting it up here - thanks again everyone! :D
