Sly & Robbie Stripped To The Bone By Howie B
The whole name of the album is "Sly & Robbie Drum & Bass Stripped To The Bone By Howie B". The album was released in 1999 and imo is an absolute classic in the futuristic Dub stakes.
Basically Sly & Robbie have recorded some rock solid riddims and given the masters to Howie B who in turn has added his magic.......the result is one of the illest sounding futuristic space Dubs around. There's a few tracks that have a sort of Dubstep quality to them, in particular the track " Drilling For Oil". I still think that song is one of the freshest, spookiest and most bad-ass sounding things of the last 20yrs.
Has anyone else here heard this beast of an album???? If not do yourself a favour and score it as you can pick it up really cheap on amazon. The bass on it is insane as is everything else that partners it throughout.

That Disrupt album is great and I love it but I can honestly say "Strip To The Bone" sounds truly unique.
If you love Sly & Robbie you'll simply cream your pants when you hear this album. There's soooo many awesome tracks but "Drilling For Oil" really is some freaky alien sounding Dub which really is out of this world. The way the song builds up then drops into it's alien riddim is devastating.
Strip To The Bone has a real sparse atmospheric DEEP devastatingly DUB alien feel about it which I still haven't found anywhere else (and I have been trying for years!). Robbie Shakespeare's bass in it is outrageous and Sly's drumming is absolutely superb and crisp sounding. The teaming up of Howie B with the Riddim Twins is pure genius and I really do hope they'll get back together again.
So Alfie my friend (and all here who love Dubstep/Bass) I'd recommend parting with £2-£3 (amazon are selling it new for 99p!) and picking this bad bwoy up and cranking your sound system when you get it.

Oh by the way..........this album is in no way a "Drum'n'Bass" (genre) album......it is Devastatingly'n'Deep'n'Sparse'n'Atmospheric'n'Alien'n'Bad-Ass'n'Dub'n'Bass. That sums it up perfectly.

Yeah it's such a fantastic album and one which sadly not many people are aware of? It blows me away that you can pick it up so cheap too!! So I ALWAYS put people onto this album who dig Dub or Electronica type music.
That track "Drilling For Oil" really is a beast too.....the way it slowly builds up and the weird sounds in the backround are so awesome. It's just so alien sounding.
I love "Major Magic" too.....Sly's drumming is wicked...... shit the whole album kicks major ass and it is a pleasure to hear someone else picking it up. Now it's time for everyone else to grab a copy for cheap from Amazon and blow out your woofers!

Yeah Ballistic Squeeze is another beast on it! I love the way it starts off all really quiet and tropical Jamaica then the classic "Ballistic Affair" Bassline BOOMS out of nowhere!Slim wrote:Got this on your recommendation the other day actually, it is pretty damn good, although in my opinion Ballistic Squeeze is easily the best track on there. Didn't know Mr Dunbar and Mr Shakespeare ever went this far out, pretty cool to hear.
Another "far out" Sly & Robbie offering is the album "Version Born" which was released in 2004 and features folk such as Tricky, Bill Laswell, Beans, Black Thought, Killah Priest & more! This album is also a beast and well worth the £3-£4 that Amazon are asking......

Here is a review of the album and a few songs below it.....
Sly and Robbie - Version Born
"Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare and Bill Laswell: that is a heavyweight team if ever there was one and here they pull in collaborators to put down some dark, dark tunes. Deep bass exploration.
Pretty much the ultimate modern day beats and bass squad, the music on this Long Player is a gift for artists like Killah Priest, Black Thought and Beans and Hawkman to rap and toast over. There is no doubt that everyone on this album knows that they need to be at the top of their game to take advantage of the talent on offer. And they do.
The album blasts off with a deeply funky bassline-driven track Subzero, featuring Black Thought. But as good as the rap is, the bass is the star on this track, if your head isn't nodding to this track, you need to check it is still attached to your neck.
But the soul sisters get just as much of a look-in as the hip hop cats on this LP. Everyone will recognise the Eurythmics-penned Here Comes The Rain Again. Now the arrangement is original and the track is delivered with style by Imani Uzuri but, for this reviewer at least, that track got seriously played out the first time round.
Much more welcome, is the utterly addictive Perspective featuring Woyneab Miraf Wondwossen. Her voice is just a blessing and even if the message of the song is simple enough, it's delivered with such skill that I defy anyone not to sing along. The contrast with the heavy backing track is also sublime.
And it's great to hear N'dea Davenport again with her unique delivery over a quality tune like For the Living. When these guys do soul, they add a punch and a level of substance that ensures these tracks hit the spot.
And if that was not enough, woven in among the soul and the hip hop are a series of superlative dub tracks as you would expect from these two dub masters and the mighty Bill Laswell, himself no stranger to dubnology.
Three genres united in bass."

As for Howie B.....his albums are pretty damn good too. "Music For Babies" is pure bliss/tribal/electro/hip hop/weird. "Snatch" and "Turn The Dark Out" are awesome too. My fav of his though was "Folk". It was more a song oriented album and it really is beautiful.

Virtually all of Scientist's albums feature Sly & Robbie on the riddim section.ginsu wrote:i cant say that album made a big impression on me. i have some scientist bootleg featuring sly and robbie beats thats epic
Really surprised someone who's into Scientist and is on a Dubstep forum didn't get into that album??? Everyone has their own taste though and I can see why alot of fans of vintage Dub don't really get into the futuristic type of sound.....personally I think this album is amazing and I'm still yet to hear a track as alien and menacing as "Drilling For Oil".
