Re: How many tracks should I have for a demo?
Coming from a visual effects background, if you can't wow anyone in the first 30 seconds, you may be at a disadvantage. Punch them in the face with your best stuff, quickly. It may even be to your advantage to just unload your stuff AS a demo. Meaning if your tracks have a long intro (nothing wrong ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV-hSgL1R74 Classic. As an aside, Orbital is one act I never got a chance to see in my party every weekend days. And that was like a decade ago. The best act I ever saw live was Spacemen or Rabbit in the Moon, maybe it would be Squarepusher but the crowd was awful, to...

Re: "after I collect the sounds, put 'em together in a beat"
Is that a clip from Detroit Techno City? I started watching it, haven't finished it yet. I want a portable recorder so badly, nothing as fancy as what he has, but just to be able to punch and kick and hit things. So much sound in the world, it's the bestest freestest thing.

Re: MAC USERS
You don't even NEED logic pro either. Logic express has ALMOST everything that pro has. You get plenty of instruments, effects and all that in express. I think Main Stage, a synth or 2, and a few of the better compressors and reverbs are left out. And some sort of CD authoring tool. Pro is worth the...

Re: Lugging a MIDI controller + laptop to a gig?
I never really understood this. It's all just tools that are a means to an end. The mix should stand on it's own, beyond that it's just a technical exercise and personal preference. Anyone that laughs at you should probably spend less time worrying or mocking you and focus more on either having a go...

Re: A simple midi keyboard.
One thing I think a lot of people do is think about their immediate needs. You say you have little experience with controllers, maybe you should go to a shop and play with a few. Sure a small board that's inexpensive with minimal features might be perfect today, but what about 3 months from now when...

Re: List your hardware
I have mostly a software setup right now, and looking for some powerhouse hardware bits to round out the sound design, I def need a better interface and my monitors are usable, but I'd like to upgrade. All things being perfect I'd like to add an Andromeda and a Virus TI 2 to my current setup: Akai A...

Re: Bathroom Synth
Look on ebay for an old Yamaha QY portable sequencer. About the size of a gameboy, my friend in college had a QY 70 and it was pretty decent. I got a QY 10 used for $30 back in the day, harder to work with, and older with less functions, but it's at least usable, and a decent scratch pad. Or an SU 1...

Protip: You could get a free talkbox. Smoke 2-3 packs of cigs for a while and your insurance will pay for one after your tracheotomy.

Re: my best friend is dead
I know the feeling. I lost the woman I love only 2 years ago. Just remember it's healthy to grieve, and take whatever time you need to do it. Don't try and shove it down and hide it, it will come out in bad ways. Embrace it, it sucks, but eventually you'll stop feeling bad and move on to thinking ab...
