Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for February, 2011

@Espy- I have one word to describe that... "FATTY!"... really thick, nice big sounds. I definitely want to see how it finishes out : ) My only criticism would be simply to make sure the song doesn't turn out sounding too much like a typical brostep track, but that's more a matter of personal ...

Re: self synthesized drums and techniques

I haven't made any drum samples with hardware yet... other than an 808 style kick on the new Gaia Sh01 when I was in guitar center...

Although I use absynth 5 and massive to create almost every drum and percussion sound in my music. A bit difficult at first, and sometimes I still need a bit of luck ...

Re: Novation Launchpad (live dubstep performance)

i've been using the launchpad for my sets too... I bounce my tracks to 4 audio tracks per song then into 8-16 loops depending on how long I want each one... I do a mix of loop dj'ing and live pa... The only thing I don't do live usually is my drums, I do those with loops and play my basslines and ...

Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for JANUARY, 2011

@Saharadubstep- nice track, personally I kinda liked the intro... but like debaser said, i think the intro and drop make you expect a little more, and more sub couldn't hurt

@antman- also liked this one, but I felt that the drop was a little too unexpected... keeping the sense of surprise is very ...

@Sqwuables- Can tell you've had some production experience, nice bass wobble... could definitely use some sub bass on the wobble once it comes in, but from an arrangement perspective it was awesome

@resykle- pretty dope track, I really like the industrial sound but that kick drum could definitely ...

One thing that can help you hear what the release is doing... excuse me if somebody already mentioned this, I read through most of the posts but shamarji said something about setting a really high ratio to hear the release... this is somewhat how i learned compressors...

I learned mostly with an ...

Re: The 'help me make this sound!' thread

There's a 320ms delay on the sound. Some of the notes are very short, and keep interrupting eachother, on the same pitch, it's just to trigger a new amplitude envelope.

Keep at it. Don't forget inserting or sending some slight reverberberation.
Hmmm, I will definately try out the delay... really ...

Re: The 'help me make this sound!' thread

Not every modulation source is an LFO.

As for your question - try some basic square waves with white noise. And fuck with the noise. Modulate the pitch. Keep listening to the lead and find out what's missing in yours.
I do plenty of FM synthesis and sound design, I'm aware that modulation is ...

Making lead from Emalkay/Pendulum tracks

I really didn't want to add ANOTHER how-to-make this sound thread to the list... but I've looked, and tried, and experimented...even bumped old threads referring these tracks... yet I still haven't gotten the sound I want, or anybody that has shared their attempts at making this lead.

Basically ...

Re: Emalkay - When I Look At You SUB Help!

I've been trying to make the lead in this song for a while, and the one like that in Pendulum's 'set me in fine' on their immersion album ... tried all kinds of stuff. Oscillators at different octaves... square, saw, pwm, triangle... detuning them from each other... monophon, pitch cutoff ...

Re: Emalkay - When I Look At You SUB Help!

if you're using a pure sine on an octave low enough to be sub bass, you shouldn't have anything to EQ out ;)
ya a sine wave at the correct volume should do it... but certain frequencies seem to sound fatter than others... there's debate on whether the tail of an 808 is bassier than a sine wave ...

Re: SAMPLING: ABLETON vs MPC500

use ableton if you need to change or alter the samples in any way (although you can do this somewhat on the mpc also)... if you have samples that you want to use how they are then load them into the mpc

the only reason you'd load something into ableton first is because you want to change the sound ...

Re: Sound design tips, tricks, thoughts, resources, etc

Wicked thread. I've been trying to layer heaps of different atmospheric parts. Each is mainly quiet, but with a few louder bits in it. When they're layered it means you have different things coming in and out, and can get complex atmospheres.

For example: layered recorded sample of me walking ...

Re: WORKS IN PROGRESS FOR AUGUST, 2010

Here's an update of my last WIP. I've pulled it apart and changed the progression (as in added some), given it a proper beginning and end (kinda) and messed with the mix. I also added hihat to the drums as suggested.
