Re: Help Me Make That Sound - September 2011

Alright, I need help with the bass in this song. I get close with compressing a saw wave in massive, but beyond that I'm clueless as to what else would be needed. FL user here, if that makes helping a bit easier. Another question with this song is the kick. It's obviously a compressed kick with a hi...

CPU has begun spiking at an alarming rate recently, HELP

(FL User) As of recently (let's say, in the past 2 days) whenever I start playing a loop created with just one VST, no effects no nothing, my CPU usage has been climbing into very dangerous territory. At times the loop will start to stutter and it'll spike to 90-99%. The VST being used is Sylenth1, ...

A few tips for recreating this bass? (FL users are a plus)

Assuming I'm identifying it correctly as bass and not just a lead of some sorts It kicks in for this song at around 0:30 seconds. Ignore the fact that it's Deadmau5, Prog House, and I'm posting this in a Dubstep forum. I'm just a curious guy and you guys have the best answers out there for me when i...

Re: Programming small pre-drop drum fills

I think he's talking about the small drum fill, right before the drop. the fill your hearing in that track sounds like a sample of a live kit. it's only three hits. 2 snares at different velocitys/pitch and a tom hit. if you program this it's gonna sound really stiff and quantized, you could try pr...

Re: Programming small pre-drop drum fills

Ok, this is assuming you're talking about a 4/4 kick pattern... Make a small pattern, say 4 bars in length. For the first bar, have the kick normal spaced, on the 1. For the second bar, have the kick double spaced, so being on the 1 & 3 For the third bar, have the kick on the 1, 2, 3 & 4 Fo...

Programming small pre-drop drum fills

In case the title makes no sense to you, here's one example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9_apoZ4eKk I've been trying to achieve something like this for hours in FL and I'm getting nowhere. Would I be better off attempting it with FPC or is the piano roll and some effects added the way to go? I'm...

Re: Skrillex assistance. NO, this is not about bass or leads

Stop trying to copy people down to the frequency of their fuckin percs. Be your own artist. This is an art. How can I be as nice and understanding as possible... You act as if I'm asking how to recreate a whole song. I'm asking how to recreate a snare. A SNARE. Not his bass, not the lead from scary...

Re: Skrillex assistance. NO, this is not about bass or leads

Alright, I got two seperate things for you guys to critique Here's a beat with the snare I made (Yes, it's a 45 second attempt at re-creating Hey Sexy Lady, so sue me, it was the song in my original post anyways) https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Drum%20Fill.mp3?w=88035d95 And this is the snare by itse...

Re: Skrillex assistance. NO, this is not about bass or leads

Would it help if when after layering my snares, I only work on compression on say, 1 of em, and leave the other normal? Would that keep that strong thump/snap that hits first, or is that only gonna set me back? I know I'm asking alot of questions when clearly there's a search bar up there, but I hav...

Re: Skrillex assistance. NO, this is not about bass or leads

Off topic, but I feel good about asking a Skrillex question and not getting bombarded with Hams and Alpacas. TBH, I was pretty scared to even ask. But this is all very helpful and I'll work on it today. And if it's not too much to ask a second question, this one pertaining to Deadmau5, so hold on to...

Re: Skrillex assistance. NO, this is not about bass or leads

I'll give you credit that was pretty close. Only thing keeping it from being REALLY close is that the cymbal needs to blast straight out of the snare, whereas in your example there was a a split second before the cymbal "blossomed". And I appreciate the help, and it is my project, and afte...

Skrillex assistance. NO, this is not about bass or leads...

Instead, the one thing that keeps me stumped is his drums. Maybe to everyone else they sound bland and boring, but the snare he uses and if I'm correct, a crash cymbal, just sound right together. For an example, the snare in this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMdXOqq3WL4. I don't doubt I'm no...

Marlow's Colossus: Any ideas?

Any ideas on how he manages to obtain this sound? I had been messing around in Massive, and just as quick as I thought I got it, I lost it. I'm trying to keep myself from sounding like I'm a "How do I get that Excision/Datsik sound" as much as possible. I just think the sound would work we...

Re: Downlink vs Datsik

Poppin' the first-post-cherry right here. I've only started listening to dubstep since about mid-July when my friend put on the first 10 minutes of Excision's Shambhala 2008 mix. From then on I got introduced to a whole boatload of other artists just by coming here and watching you guys discuss them...
