I would recommend either an Alesis QX49 or an M-Audio Oxygen 49, these are both affordable midi controllers and will have all the features you need to get the show off the road.

Great way to synthesize a kick drum is to use a sine wave + square wave -> Low pass the waves so that the sine is subby and the square adds a few harmonics to fatten the sound a bit.
