Vocal Effect
Hey guys, been following Zhu and I gotta say, his productions are top notch. Anyhow, how does one go about achieving this insane vocal effect. Starts at 1.18 Vocals are pitched down, but what else. Im lost. Seems like a similar technique the weeknd uses. https://soundcloud.com/zhu/faded Thanks in ad...

Re: Mix on Headphones/Pan on cheap monitors?
Yes. I cant speak for everyone on here, but for me its the way I work right now. I use the rokit 5's along with an AKG k240. I personally find with certain effects like reverb and compression etc, I use the headphones to dial it in and check on monitors finding a good balance between the two. Also i...

Re: Getting fat drums without eating your headroom!
On top of eq and compression, saturation and parallel compression( does eat up headroom, so just balance the volume at the end)

Re: Getting energy into leads
Ditto on using distortion. At the source of the sound itself, try making it soft if that makes any sense. Using a saw/square wave, try to filter out a lot of the highs and quite a bit of the mids. Then start piling on some distortion. Play with the low pass filter to get the sound you are after. Als...

Re: So I attempted to remake Archangel...
hats off to you sir!
what was the source of the vinyl crackles?
Abletons vinyl distortion sounds artificial and i cant seem to blend vinyl samples to sit well in the mix.

Re: Apply what youve learned?
Just had a listen to the track. Mix wise I noticed that your bass is panned slightly to the right. Also the levels are jumping. Try balancing the drums first. Get the low end sounding tight, i.e. sub,Kick, mid-bass. Then start balancing out other instruments. Also the snare in the intro is too loud/...

Re: Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness (Russkiy Remix)
When it drops mate, the kick on the one is missing (first drop)? Im not sure as Im on laptop speakers.
I agree with bass institute. Try blending the vocals and bass. Maybe lower the volume on the bass a tad bit and compress the vocals and bass into a single bus.
Other than that, solid track!

Re: This is the best track I have ever made.. and now I hate
Oh man. So relatable. I think one way around this is to finish the creative part as quickly as possible (composition and arrangement) After that, one thing i've been meaning to try would be to save the current mixdown, then start the mix from scratch again, making a 2nd or 3rd version of the mix. I ...

yes the ATH-m50's
The low frequency response is insane compared to the akg k240's that I use.

Re: Comment on my Ghetto DIY Premaster?
op, Do you feel that the steps you listed destroy and degrade the quality of the master? If it works and you are pleased with the result, then keep doing what your doing. There's truly no right or wrong way. Some folks make use of multiband compression followed by limiting. Other times, if the mix i...

Re: Sub bass level
Im in the same situation as you op as I mix on 5" monitors. What helps me tho, is using a reference track as others suggest along with a spectral analyser. Using this, you get a general idea of the relation (volume wise) of your kick to sub level. Also what might help is to saturate the sub a l...
