Need inspiration! How do I come up with some new sounds?
I'm in a bit of a rut here. I haven't produced substantial in months. I always just tend to open up Ableton, fiddle for a bit, then exit out. I think my main problem is that I just cant come up with any new and interesting sounds. I guess it doesn't help that all i have are freeware synths but I ...

Re: Black metal
In this type of music, the playing is more important than the sound itself.

Having both 808 kicks and a sub-bass line?
This question is more production in general than strictly dubstep. I recently decided o do a lift of Eminem's Lose Yourself just for fun. The main kick is a heavy 808 just like in the real song. I recorded my bass guitar part and felt that in the original song there was a low sub bass that just ...

Re: Easy Synthesizer for Basics!
TAL-Bassline is not only very easy to use/understand, its also free!!! It's also one of my favourite synths for simple monophonic leads and basses

Re: [POLL]How much would/do you pay for your sample packs?
All of the sample packs I have are freeware packs or they came with my DAW. The freeware packs are mainly just drum one-shots though. I havent found any loops, basses, synths or anything in the free packs that were very good however, just drums. If I did come across a quality sample pack that ...

Pick a DAW and master the shit out of it! Once you feel you have mastered it's native plug-ins, invest in vsts.

Is it even worth it to sample records anymore?
I absolutely love sampling and the art of using different parts of already recorded music to make entirely new songs. But I've so many stories about the legality of sampling and how many people are having a hard time getting their songs out there because of sample clearance issues. Is sampling ...

To what extent do you guys use sample packs?
I have only been producing for a few months now and come from a rock music background. I bought a copy of Ableton Live Intro a few months back and have been having a lot of fun with it (except the effects and vst caps) and it comes with a selection of the Live 8 library and an entirely seperate disc ...

Why hasn't Skrillex released anything new in almost a year?
I have been wondering this for a while. He was banging out song after song in 2010 and 2011 but released next to nothing in 2012. There was that Make it burn dem song (which I wasn't very fond of) and that My name is Skrillex remix for Wreck it Ralph. That's basically it. Now it's officially 2013 ...

Re: How much music theory do i need to know?
The more theory you know the better honestly. Start out by learning what each note on the keyboard/piano roll is and what notes make up the chord for that root note. Learn the difference between minor and major scales, and develop your ear so that you can identify what each note sounds like (example ...

Tips for creating ambience?
Hello everyone,
I am currently working on chilled/laidback/ambient remix and am having some trouble trying to create that vibe. It sounds pretty goo d so far, it's just that I'm not sure what to add as it consists of only a vocal, string arp, synth bass, and a texture layer at the moment.

Do you input midi from your keyboard or use your mouse?
After watching/reading a bunch of interviews, i'm quite shocked by how many professional producers say that they prefer to draw in all of their midi on the piano roll rather than play it with their midi keyboard. Skrillex and Flux pavillion (flameshield up) both say they prefer it this way. I still ...
