If you need presence in bass, distort.
If you want a clean bass sound with presence, layer with the bass in a higher octave, then boost around 5k+ if needed.

Re: [VIDEO] "Sampling Soul" - discussion of Nas' Illmatic
At college we did a class using Illmatic where we dissected the songs and reconstructed them using the original samples and such. It was such a good lesson. Illmatic is one of the best albums out there.

You mean the DAW you're using has absolutely no string/brass synth presets or sampler presets?
Find some free samples on the internet and use those.

Re: Need some advice
May 7th? Sounds like plenty of time to master it. The record label will most definitely master it themselves. Give it the best master you can - compress, EQ, compress/multiband, limit. Mastering, as we all know, is an art of it's own so the label&judges aren't expecting something of incredible m...

Re: Stereo widening.
Getting a 'wide mix' depends on a few things. Really, using a stereo widener wont do a whole lot. If you apply to much of it, you'll notice warping. You need to just pan your instruments intelligently. If you want a single instrument to sound wide then you should try frequency splitting and panning/...

Re: Summertime Production?
I think summer is the beast, and easiest times to produce! Summer makes me inspired and upbeat. Doesn't mean I will be sitting indoors in front of a desk all day. Can take the set-up outside or go completely in the box.

Re: The Reese Bass Thread
Layered a reese with a sub and added some reverb to an insert track, not amazing but anyone got any tips on making my reeces sound grimier and heavier? Or VST's that have a similair effect? https://soundcloud.com/jackwoodyisherwood/more-processing-for-dubstep What you need is a lot of distortion on...

https://soundcloud.com/ieatfunk/reese-resampling/s-kyPCo This is my first real attempt at making a decent reese. The first is the dry and the second is the wet. It has about 7 stages of resampling. Re: How do people feel about reusing sounds?
I use the same reese as a starting point. I use differences in resampling or change the sound design a tad. Using 'the same' patch over and over again is what develops your personal sound. I often use the same samples again, to give listeners a familiar feel when listening to my tunes. Often the sam...

Re: Music theory within melodies?
Haha yeah, as people said... Arpeggios up the arse using the first and fifth chord of their key. To someone that understands music theory it's not beautiful melody, it's two or three chords, most probably arpeggiated with an automatic arpeggiator set to random then built upon. That's how I'd make ar...

Re: Pitched down vocals
you want to EQ boost in the higher freqs, since when you pitch it down, you lose a bit of high end. Around 2.5-4khz mostly, and even possibly above to bring some more presence back. this ^ In the first SoundCloud track, the voice sounds really breathy to me (listened on shitty laptop speakers at lo...
