Re: Any mastering engineers - headroom?
Be aware of what processing might come directly after the ME loads the audio into there DAW. If I need to boost something and cut nothing before hitting the hardware, there is a risk of clipping, which is a big no no. The difference between a 24 bit digital mix exported at -0dBfs and -3dBfs (peak) i...

Re: Good vs. Bad Mastering
You have to remember what mastering is, it's the preparation of the audio for consumption, so a good master is one that sounds "right" (whatever that might be) in it's intended listening scenario(s). So some pretty obvious ones for dubstep would be that the bass needs to be balanced correc...

Re: Mastering for loudness!!
I know it's been touched upon, but one thing I think is really important when thinking about loudness and how your mixes can "go loud" is that loudness and physical level are two different things. Loudness is something our brain calculates, yeah sometimes meters allow us to work out why it...

Re: Mastering?
Nothing wrong with mix bus processing, sometimes it's a great way to get your mix sounding unique/glued/vibed up whatever you wanna do.. if that's what you want.. but if you're looking to "maximise level" you're only impairing what can be done at a later stage, go ahead and experiment with...

Re: Mastering- The Magic Secret???
Some good points there, I think generally if you finish you mix with the attitude of "well it can probably be fixed in the mastering" you are always selling yourself short, I guess it's a confidence thing, sometimes you just need another set of ears to tell you what's not working, and in t...

Re: Does it matter when mastering if your tune peaks above 0
One other thing worth reiterating yet again here: The benefit of 24-bit is that it allows you to turn stuff DOWN further without worrying about quality loss. So don't be scared to turn stuff DOWN, just be sure to export at 24-bit. Well said mr Macc :4: . Sometimes the problem is with digital faders...

Re: Tips for mastering an EP?
A few of us MEs who browse this forum provide free demos/mix analysis, and I find 9 times our of 10 if it's a clients first mastered track I end up giving them some feedback and it's a eureka moment for them. Not because I'm some kind of magical philosophical wizard, but because a mastering pair of ...

Re: Mastering..
Try some psp vintagewarmer to add "warmth" i know the pros love that plugin these days lol. Im going to try using psp xenon in my next master and see what happens. but you will lose some punch and dynamics when you boost levels using compression/limiters it really just become what you wan...

Re: Learn Mastering Technique in Free Videos
Not a bad video, although I don't follow his logic about loudness maximising first, as personally I find you need to get everything balanced EQ wise before you hit any GR on a limiter, for the exact same reason he does it the other way round... Horses for courses I guess. Also that's some hella hard...

Re: before mastering, should i lower bass levels?
Like should i lower all the kicks bass levels and sub-bass levels? so its a clear but not too punchy sounding mix. but when i master, put in alot of bass and stuff. should i do this? If it sounds good to you in your room, which you know, and you've checked it against some equal loudness tracks whic...

Re: Mastering for loudness!!
You can see this from many angles and get as emotional as you want about it. But as a producer of bass music and a mastering engineer, I have kinda to and fro opinions of this. When producing I DO use Voxengos clipper on the drum buss, and also clip other channels where I know they are going to be p...
