I would defo check the stickies up above there are fairly extensive threads on sound cards and monitors. It wouldn't hurt if you stated how much you want spend. Defo decent low priced options for both.

Well I just want to get producing again, I don't have much money so something cheap. I'd like the headphones to have a flat frequency repsonse if possible but other than that, not to fussed.

Is it possible to get a usable external sound card on a budget - £100 ish? Or am I just wasting my money on ...

Back in the Game

Hi all,

After a broken PC, new job, and a kid, I'm finally getting ready to step back into production - it's been about 4 years since I last made a tune!
I've still got all my software, decks and vinyl but have had to buy a new PC - I went for a laptop (due to lack of space!) I'll be running SX2 ...

Does anyone compare their unreleased tracks to released tracks?
I noticed someone in this forum uses a multiband comp on their mixes how common is that?

When i mix down a track i comp it to something similar just to make sure it's sounding ok.

It definatly helps to have something ...

I'm not completely clued up on this but from what I gather, everything below 40Hz needs cutting out, also make sure all the bass is in mono.

The reason that tunes are louder is something to do with the size of the grooves, for instance two tunes on one side of a record would be louder than one ...

Not that I enjoy my job particularly, but it is kind of nice to know that my free time is MINE to enjoy how I please once I have finished work, unlike when I was studying. Back then, I always should have been doing some work, so free time was a kind of illusion.

As far as mastering go's it usually takes me about 30- 60 minutes as all they usually need is a bit of low freq cut, some 12k Hz added and small amount of compression.
