S'right, a few well chosen pieces of gear that you can get to know inside out, is better than a room full of gear that ain't gonna do you fook all but accumulate dust.

It's all about experimenting, cheap old microphones from car boots or jumble sales have way more character that a two grand Neauman ...

You can get stuff fairly cheaply on E Bay these days, an E Mu sampler secondhand can cost you as little as sixty quid, and they have blinding filters on them.
Aka samplers about eighty notes for an S3000, if you're lucky you can get a fully expanded one for around a ton. Both makes are really useful ...

Cheers lads, thanks for the advice.

Ordered the WD 800 firewire HD, and an extra 2GB memory chip for the IMac, just to make sure there's enough capacity.

Incidentally if anyone wants cheap IMac/Mac memory, Crucial.com do a very reasonable deal on memory, my 2GB IMac compatible chip cost £18.00 ...

Personally, i used to have a smoke years ago when trying to make music, i remember being hypnotised by a loop and listening to things for ages thinking that they were the greatest sounds i'd ever heard.
Didn't do anything for my objectivity.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I like the approach of recording one or two hardware items at a time straight into Logic, at least this keeps things simple, then any further editing can be done inside the software.
I was aware that the Apogee has no MIDI functionality, and as has been pointed ...
