have a good idea of what you want out of a tune.... -is it multi-layered, busy -minimal -is it about the beat or bass or vocal -is it about the melody -whatevs once you have a clear picture of what you want to be the main "actor" in your tune then you can focus on "directing" it ...

Laptop or desktop?

If its laptop, does it make the same sound when you pull the power cable out?

how else would you beat match without drums/percussion or some obvious sound on the 1? And drums rolling out at the end of the track prob ain't that useful... dj's rarely play tracks to the end... thats why you need it at the start :) If you're hearing things that sound off, then its either not beat...
