I think that if you are using a laptop, you can get one of those double shielded power supplies (the ones with the black plastic earth pin on the socket that goes into the wall). You could just disconnect one of the earth pins but this would be dangerous.

What actually is the best way to back up?

I use cubase and if my desktop failed and I had backups of the cubase song files, would I be able to open them in a re-installed cubase, even tho it will have different vst setups and the like? This makes the midi files only half as useful right?

It seems like a waste of cpu to load a whole EQ plug just to lo-cut.
