Hmm... I still use LAME 3.97 but I've just tried converting a WAV file using LAME 3.98 and it created an MP3 file with quality index of 60 (which is -q 0)

Renoise.

I use it on my Mac mini G4 with 512 Mb RAM. My computer is even crappier than yours. :? But Renoise works smoothly.

I can give two advices:

1. Try every DAW that has demo version and choose one that suits your needs.
2. Learn the software you like. It may seem difficult at first but it will pay off.
