I just realised

Post by MidnightMassDubstep » Thu Jan 29, 2009 8:26 pm

You really don't need all of this crap that everyone uses for listening to their tunes... I mean, like, monitors that cost 5959595938239202872$$$ and are mega super accurate sub bass 53qs335 ohms megahertz0rz etc.

I agree, you prolly need some fairly accurate monitors if you're aiming for Hz - perfect mixes, but not any over 200 pounds, really.
Seriously, I know people who make amazing sounding tunes, and they just borrow my 40 quid roland headphones, and I was just like WAT

But yeah, a good workman never blames his tools.

I'm probabaly talking utter bulllsheet but hey, your call.

I use 12 pound headphones from HMV and some computer speakers to mix my tunes and no ones ever complained except from the most deviant of audiophiles.

having said that, I don't mix my tracks with the intention of having them played in a club, so when no one does it's my loss at the end of the day :P

nah your absolutely right. You dont NEED those tools, the same way all the little aff kids and spic kids who play football in their feet and have a shabby little ball with no air are all amazing footballers.

doesnt mean that once they get the opportunity theyr going to stay using their peasant gear though does it?

a friend (who is also well respected producer, engineer, mastering chap) uses 'headphones of truth' after a top notch monitoring system, which are basically from a sony ericsson mobile.

I do something similar, ie, play my tunes on the loudspeaker of my Nokia 6210. The only thing that should be lacking from a well mixed song is the sub.

sometimes equipment can shape your sound though.

For example certain types of monitors have different sounding mid / high's. Some are naturally punchier, this will affect the sound of your mixes.

Its not about having the best sounding monitors, its about having accurate monitors. Sam is right, equipment will color the sound and relay unreliable information to your ear which will surprise you when you play your mixes elsewhere. That being said, if you critique your mixes on several different sources you can become very familiar with how your mixes translate and can learn to compensate where needed. The downside is that when you upgrade or change you will have to relearn your monitors because you'll be used to compensating for the peculiarities of the ones you were using. That's why some engineers will carry their own speakers with them no matter what studio they're in because even hi-end monitors are different and they would rather work with what they know.
