Hipnotik festival - hip hop's global paradigm

Post by numaestro » Wed Sep 13, 2006 3:33 pm

On 16 and 17 Sept. Hipnotik Festival to be held at CCCB in Barcelona.

The event includes DJ sessions, MC Battles, round-tables, workshops etc.
It is sponsored by Eastpak and San Miguel among others with participation from Vestax and Stanton (among others) . It also has the Generalitat (Catalan government) participating alongside local media (radio and magazines). More info from www.encuentrohipnotik.com

In the light of hip-hop history - I take to be true it started in the Bronx in the 70's partly as a result of the construction of The Cross-Bronx Expressway - with young people re-constructing their community digging among the rubble etc. What do people make of the above festival - or things of its kind.

Is it showing the natural growth and expansion of a form of music? Is it part of how hip-hop has gone globally mainstream? Is it an example of how the status quo appropriates cultural or counter-cultural objects? Is it all of this or nothing of the kind?

What do you make of this? Would be interested to see what you all think
