A good friend of mine uses garage band to great effect.

a DAW is really a blank canvas - when it comes down to it they all basically do the same thing.

mmnnn not so sure about that tbh. but to answer the op i used garage band for a bit n and its good but i tended to go for the loops cause im kinda lazy. dont think theres a lfo on there as well so you wont get such a slick wob-wab-wibble.

Basically, you could ride a tricycle to work, but learning how to drive a car would get you there faster and easier
true but garage band is a great inexpensive start for working with the very idea of creating music and sounds on a computer.

and im sure there are audio units somewhere that let you make some decent wobble noises.

try it out and if its limiting try something else.

exactly. garageband supports au's. thus, you can load in any 3rd party au synth and get yr wobble on. or your drum programming on. or your compression/eq/etc on...

it ain't fully featured, sure, but it's also definitely not protools LE (my 2001 trying-to-record-on-os9-for-free crew, stand uP!)

It is possible, all explained by this god.

I can see it being good for getting ideas down super fast. I dabbled with it on my friends Macbook when he first got it...I thoughty "wow a free DAW".

I found it so basic, it wasn't basic.

used GB for a while on macbook before getting Logic, you can't really ask for much with a free DAW, and its great for getting your sketches/ideas down quickly, and you can use plug-ins so your set.

Upgrade for a big guy when you've feel like youve outgrown GB

dont forget you can also open garageband project files with logic, which means its great as a stripped down tool for getting ideas down and writing tracks, then when youve got your ideas down or want to shell out the dollar to push your production to the next level, you can get logic, load up your tracks and do your tweaking and mastering..

massively overlooked tool imho

It's more funny than anything. I still have mad respect for Polow Da Don.
