MIX DOWNS...

Post by diverseconcepts » Tue Feb 03, 2009 2:14 am

Everyone has their special technique of mixing down tracks on whatever program they use...

I use Reason and have found a sound I'm happy with, (hope you guys are too?) just using the mastering tools on Reason but I also add the tracks as seperate tracks into cubase and EQ on there to get that full bodied sound.

The process I use on reason is pretty simple...

I have the mastering suite then the mixing desk... I bring the master volume on the mastering suite to about 12 'o' clock.
Every device I use, whether it be a redrum, rex or whatever I always press tab key and stereo everything on the mixer by putting the wires in seperate channels and panning them on the flip side.
Once Ive found the sound I'm using I put the volume on the device to max and then bring down the volume on the channels on the mixer as needed... I then add the EQ and sweep the mid sections to balance out the sound and maybe a maximizer to add a lil volume but almost never, only if the quality of the sample is a lil weaker. I do this on every sound device, everytime...

I then export all the tracks seperatley and then put into cubase and EQ all the tracks seperatley and get a phat sound...

This is all using Reason 4 and Cubase.

I was just wondering if there are any other lil secrets that I mite have missed on Reason. Can anyone enlighten me???

I don't do anything.
Straight up. No limiter, no compressor, nothing.

That panning thing you're doing is a waste of time.

You put the mixer after the 'Mastering Suite' ?!?

I'll keep sayin it. The mixer is the weak link in Reason, I challenge everyone to build a tune with no mixer just so they can hear how much better their tunes will sound!

not if you want to have control over the stereo width of instruments/fx returns... for example narrowing the spread of a delay return or a drum group.

fairly standard practice if mixing down on a console. just gives you another option for stereo imaging :)

To be honest I'm not that good with sound technolagy... All I know is what I've taught myself on Reason. Safe for the tips, I'll keep them all in mind for future tracks!!!

But... as mixdowns go, the tracks on my myspace have not been re-run through Cubase so aint to there full potential.

What you guys reckon on the sound I got so far though?
