Played guitar to grade 4 when I was much younger, totally lost interest in rock and guitar after I got hooked on electronic music. Has had no impact on my production.

taught guitar/bass for 4 yrs, self taught for another 8, self taught drums for 3-4 years. bit of piano, banjo, charango, and currently have a violin which i'm trying to teach myself. BA in Music Tech, currently do Post-grad. research at York.

Yo, as were on about the dub vs metal thing thought i'd post this ere. I

have put it in "other music" forum but I dont think any1 goes there

Its a remix of Nailbomb's 24 hr bullshit. I basically just ripped a few riffs

off the track an messed about wid them.

I dont think it was really the right track for a dub re-mix, think I should have gone with some groove metal instead.

Self taught Guitar for about 5 years, classically trained for about year till i lost interest and just wanted to shred. Self taught drums, self taught bass, self taught key n now bustin the melodica bwoii!

This thread made me thing about my making music, just sitting cliking piano rol buttons till it sounds right, so i decided to go downastairs, and jam on the piano for a few hours (yes .. a REAL instrument)

Recorded it into the PC, and heres the result

(the chords, and piano improv are all unedited, thats exactly how they were played (except there are some layered partsin the piano bit))

Sounds a lot more "human" than you could ever get from clikcing a mouse imo.

In my very humble opinion...it sounds like a similar type of tempo. I know I can dance the same to metal as I do to dubstep, cept more swingy arm bizness and general RARiness to the metal... And when I listen to the way a metal song is structured, the breakdowns and like 2steppy snappy bits are the same as the breakdowns and drops in dubstep.... = my 2ps worth.

In answer to the original question - I can play guitar badly, piano also badly and the recorder like a badman...oh and drums badly too. I find that knowing how drums are played helps with writing sorta humanised drumbeats...ok now its half one I'm pretty baked and rambling...bed time!!

Venetian Snares did Dubstep remixes of black sabbath (under the alias of "Snares"). It's okay...He is better at Breakcore though.

Yeah, this track that I never try to pronouce is the shit. This is probably the track that I prefer from him, even though his breakcore and modern classical things are fucking great.

I played trumpet for 8 years in school in band, pep band and jazz band. Used to love to improv on jazz scales. I think it has helped with melodies in the sense of knowing what notes "belong" near each other by ear. The more music I hear being made by people who have no formal music training that blows me away, the less Im thinking theory has anything to do with anything though.

I also sang and played a tiny bit of bass in a punk/rock/ska/funk/etc band in high school.

On the topic of metal real quick... its all rock anyway. Regardless of what you consider a style of music to be personally, Korn is considered Nu-Metal by a vast majority of people on this planet. That was the point being made. Distance himself sited Korn as a major influence in his music, so using them as an example of metal's influence in Distance's production makes perfect sense, weather or not you agree that they are infact Metal or not.

Personally, I feel all dubstep is hip hop anyway, so the argument should have been about Pseudo-Nu Metal's influence on slow, bass heavy hip hop.
