using torrents to distribute dj mixes

Post by sek [espionage] » Sat Dec 17, 2005 5:21 pm

thoughts?

pro - a pretty effective and affordable alternative to buying webspace.

con - torrents have a fairly shady stigma attached to them
- not really sure if it would be that fast, unless their are a large number of people seeding a given mix..

i'm curious to know what you guys think about this..

Stigma?

It would only be fast if a lot of people were on and STAYED on - also people on University connections would probably not be able to get on them.

Have you been to The Mixing Bowl? http://www.themixingbowl.org/

After reading your post I checked back there for the first time in ages and they've made a Garage/Grime section that has loads of dubstep in it. Some of the torrents have six seeders which isn't that bad.

We could just colonise that space. I'm going to to see if I can start seeding ones I already have that are listed there without downloading them again.

Note: If you use Mixing Bowl apparently you have to use ports other than 6881-6890 (i.e. the default range used by BT clients). They suggest a range in the 50 000s or 60 000s. I'll get on it when I have a moment to monkey around.

Looks promising though. :)
What does 'Port 6881 is blacklisted. Change your port to something different. Read the site FAQ for info.' mean?

As some isp's throttle common filesharing ports we ask that you use something other than the defaults. We advise that you change your port(s) to a number between 50,000 and 60,000. Instructions for your client will most likely be on their website.

Remember to forward the same port(s) in your router and open in your firewall. Portforward.com has instructions for most routers.

EDIT:

I just started seeding a mix I already had. Just had to start out by leeching for a minute to find out what the .mp3 in the torrent is called. Then I just renamed my existing version and replaced the partial download with it. I'm using port 8999.
