just bought a tune of urs the other day.

how did u get your name?

where do you see dubstep going?
well i used to be called henchman for my dnb, and was gonna call myself henchstep for my dubstep but found out jakesy had already started up the hench crew so decided as i wasnt goin down the gym no more and had a b.o problem that maybe stenchman was a better look for me. and i see dubstep going in more possible directions than i could ever contemplate. i see it constantly evolving swallowing up all inferior genres in its path lol

and what would you say makes a tune recognisable?

thanks for ur time peace
ermmm i dunno, theres no one thing that makes a tune dancefloor, i suppose its just a combination of elements that make you want to dance. personally i like tunes to have a kind of "skippy" element to the drums, some big meaty bass and maybe a nice little catchy melody here n there. but then again there are tunes that dont have some of those elements which i still love and smash a dancefloor. what makes a tune recognisable to me is having that bit that stays in ur head. normally either a catchy synthline or a vocal hook in it

first of all wanna say its good how u put away some of your time to help amateurs like me lol.

i use reason aswell. and have many questions that i'm sure you will be able to answer -

1) where can i get loads of good sweep samples from? reason has virtually non...

2) my malstrom only seems to have about 8 bass sounds (i do edit them myself but i still cant believe there are so few. should there be more? or have you downloaded refills especially for the malstrom? if so where can i get refills just for the malstrom?)

cheers for your time m8. keep bringin the tunes and if u get time check the tune on my myspace called 'shot a crackhead' (myspace below) and let me know wat u think. safe
sweep samples i usually grab from dnb or electro refills, altho you can get good sweeps by getting a sample in the nnxt, looping a section of it and then putting loads of portamento on it and sliding it up through the scales. this works good on both "smooth" loops (where the loop is seamless) and "choppy" loops (where theres a noticable start and end point) as on the smooth one it will rise up all nice and on the choppy one it will get faster and faster as you go up the notes, givin a good build up.

as for the malstrom, use the things which arent bass and layer them with some bass. if you mess about with the index and motion of some of the waveforms on there you can get some mental sounds. esp if you automate it to do some tweaks on them. will put up a little pack with a few malstrom sounds in a bit as well, jus gotta go for my nans bday meal in a min tho.

probs say either the scream 4 or the rv4000 as they the ones i use most! altho there are obvs vsts out there that piss all over both. i wouldnt say any of the features of reason are particularly amazing, but its reliability and ease of use makes up for the few shortcomings it has, plus the fact my shitty computer always crashes when i try openin up cubase logic or even fl!

I love your tunes man, especially distress signal.

Here's my question:
Speaking about scream4, do you use any other settings than the tape,
if so, which one and care to give an example?

Keep doing what you do best.

yea man i use tape the most but i do use most of the other settings on there, mostly for fx and background bits tho cos most of them murk the sound too much to be used on drums or bass, saying that tho sometimes using it on overdrive, distortion, fuzz and digital can work with bass but its a hit n miss thing, jus play and see what sounds right to u!

i jus tend to keep fiddling with them until they sound right, theres no black and white do this dont do that with making ur bass, its a question of experimentation and seein what works, and then gettin it in context with the rest of the tune. know it doesnt sound like much help but i dunno, if someone told me exactly how to make a bass when i started producing i wouldnt have come across half the sounds ive managed to create if u know what i mean, oh yea my biggest tip as well is dont get lazy! this is the biggest battle i have with myself

Safe man,

Is music your only income?

If yes, when did you make the decision to go full time?

Also..

How often do you get in the studio and how many hours do you spend there?

finding laziness my biggest problem at the moment!!!!!!!

Big up stench, lovin ur sounds mate! get a few questions:

before doin a set somewhere what time do you wake up during the day and do you do anything to hype urself up?

also do you do your sets under the influence of anything or are you clean when you do em?

How long have you been a reason user for and when did you feel like you had really grasped the program?

appreciate the time mate!

normally wake up as late as possible, and if im doin a late set i will try and stay up til like 6 o clock in the mornin the night before jus so my body clock is ready for it, sometimes do sets a bit under the influence but dont get on it heavy style, jus enough to loosen me up and get rid of the nerves. and so i dont feel as much of a twat with a mask on lol. been a reason user since cubase stopped workin on my comp bout 3 years ago, been meaning to get another pc and get it sorted but u know what its like. i still dont feel like i have completely grasped it now! theres always something else you dont know about your sequencer, wether its some little shortcut or a way of routing things or jus a button that u aint got a fucking clue what it does. guess its bout time i read the manual
