I'm quite interested in how we manage to have so much technology to reduce the amount of work yet we still have more and more pointless occupations to keep everyone from having more time to themselves.

Interestingly, when there were the three day weeks in the 70's, the actual manufacturing output stayed relatively level with when people were doing five days, and overtime now is said to reduce productivity in many regards as people are too tired to function correctly when they're doing their allotted hours.

There are a lot of pointless folks in middle-management who are only too happy to come up with more time and money wasteful ideas to justify their worthless position - when it fucks up they generally seem to get promoted or moved to another department. Any ideas I can remember having to improve workflow or reduce bureacracy have generally been disregarded, as it would point out that the person that came up with the initial idea was wrong, and management seems to have a great level of intellectual insecurity in admitting a mistake. Seems to be the same in most companies from the folks I've chatted to.

I calculated that if they took up my idea, it would save approximately 3 months worth of work a year. If we worked more towards work reduction rather than a "he who dies with the most toys wins" attitude, society as a whole would be far better off.

Fuckung bang on. I've had the same thing in my old job.Quetly told to shut up because the the idea you just had might make the job a little more bearable and less time consuming and better for the company then the way it was formely done.

Was a student up until last year, now I work in a call centre, i answer the phone for things like Police Community Support Recruitment, Talk to Frank, RAF Recruitment, Benefit Fraud Hotline etc. It fucking gash but it pays well and its damn quiet so i get to sit on the net all day.

Working is most definately more soul destroying than being unemployed, it tries to take away your ambitions and rape your soul, which is why its vital not to stay in one place or do the same thing for more than a few months.

Reading this, I guess I am pretty lucky to love my job. It takes alot out of me, but it is all for a purpose I believe in. I have done it for 7 years, and there have been people the whole time telling me that I cannot or should not do certain things. Those things are the things that I focus on and have become successful as a result.

There is a way to exist in babylon and use it to your own advantage. At the end of the day, my struggling with it and manipulating it ends up resulting in good things for 6,000 kids.

I'm after making loads of money and for that i need to work as hard or more as my boss tells me. got to dig deeper.

In reality I spend maybe 50% of my working hours surfing and reading stuff with dubstep blasting from the office system. I have no set working hours, so the occasional mid-week session doesn't hurt too much. Most of the design work I do is extremely boring, not something I'd put on my portfolio, and the pay's shite, but the benefit of choosing when you do your work has really made a difference for me. Sometimes I only work 3 day weeks with no impact on my pay.

I have to stress that this kind of jobs are very hard to come by around these parts at least and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Not sure how long I can keep doing this as building a proper portfolio is very important for a designer.. But I'll enjoy it as long as it lasts..

i'm a student, but whenever the interim bureau calls me i turn into parcel-guy at DHL, alongside some other students willing to work for double money as much on a sunday

and usually i have to return the weekend after because when i got money i spend it on vinyl all too fast.

Make tunes in the morning, read stuff on the web in the afternoon, go for a skate about six, have a smoke with my mates till 12 then come home and make tunes. Done that most days for about 3 months now.

Fully with MTB and the rest of the dole massive when it comes to dealing with under educated over opinionated bosses, a bit of cash would be nice though. Don't suppose anyone needs a Music Tech graduate for any music/film related work before I hand my cv in at HMV for the umpeenth time?
