Wanted - Dubstep tracks for Circus Production

Post by dreamtime » Thu Mar 05, 2009 7:18 pm

Howdy,
I'm one of the founders of a nonprofit troupe called the Dreamtime Circus and we're looking to use some dubstep tracks for our next production.

A bit of background on the show - aside from it being our second theatrical circus production that blends circus arts, theater, storytelling, fire, shadow dancing, original video and music into one psychedelically surreal journey, it is also our primary fundraiser for our South America tour where we'll perform and teach circus workshops for free everywhere we go. You can check out pix from our India tour as well as clips from our last production in San Francisco, called "Between Worlds", on our website at http://www.DreamtimeCircus.org

So, here's what we're looking for. We have five different scenes with what I'm calling "Dubstep Clowns". These clowns are the comic relief of a show that has some pretty heavy themes (dealing with the death of a performer and confronting the dark shadows of the psyche). The clowns are both the circus roustie characters in the show as well as the actual stage hands for the production. They always come out to dubstep and whatever they are doing, they are moving to the music. Generally, there are a few characteristics within the dubstep genre that I think will work well (or not so well) for these clown scenes.

1. Wobbly is fun to move to and generally a plus.
2. Instrumental preferred. Lyrics or rap would probably be a distraction. An occasional sample might be OK if it fits the scene.
3. Generally upbeat, high energy, and danceable is good. I like dubby chillout, but the clowns are there to lift the audience not lull them to sleep.
4. Edgy, techy, bassy, heavy, freaky, weird is better than fluffy, housy, happy. By danceable, I mean keep the energy up and bring on the bass, not the house beats.
5. If anyone has a track or wants to produce a track that might be considered "circus dubstep", man, that would be ideal.

SCENES WITH DUBSTEP TRACKS:
Here's a summary of scenes where I'd like to use dubstep tracks with a bit of a description of what's happening. All together, we're looking for five dubstep tracks.

Scene 1: Clowns prepare for circus rehearsal & cheer up clown Romeo.
Dubstep track that's somewhat light and upbeat (and possibly with a more morose or heavy break). This will be the first entrance of the dubstep clowns and a transition from a funeral scene to a rehearsal scene. Three of the clowns are grooving to dubstep while the clown who was in love with the aerialist who died, is sadly holding a feather of hers. The other three clowns attempt to cheer him up and get him to dance a bit.

Scene 2: Roustie Clown scene change~ juggling / hooping.
Dubstep track. Something that's good to juggle and hula hoop to.

Scene 3: Roustie Clown bit ~ line dance?
This might turn into a line dance with brooms / mops. Dubstep with enough of a rhythm to choreograph synchronized movements.

Scene 4: Drunken Roustie Clowns scene change
Very wobbly dubstep track. All the clowns will be drunk.

Scene 5: Roustie Clowns Set Up for Circus Show / Ghost Girl dances with and says goodbye to Clown Romeo
We want to fuse a dubstep track with this music box melody that comes up throughout the show. So, probably something somewhat minimal that would allow us to overlay the music box fairly easily. Or, if someone was interested in producing a track for this purpose, I could send you the music box sample once we've got that down.

Since the function of this production is to raise money for our charitable circus tour in Peru and Ecuador, we are looking for artists to donate their tracks for use in the show and to give us permission to include the music in videos of the performance that we post online. We will credit the artist everywhere - the promos and program for the show, our website, anywhere and everywhere we can. This will be an opportunity to get a lot of free promotion (our tour of India was featured on a program on CNN and we're expecting to generate a lot of press around this show). And you'll be supporting a great cause and contributing to one of the only theatrical circus performance "dubscores" that I'm aware of.

So, if you have any tracks that you think might work, please post them here or email me directly at dreams@dreamtimecircus.org.

Thanks,
Chris

I work with Circus up here in Humboldt. Coincidence you have this thread, I just posted a song called "Circues"... it's circus music in my head, but probably not in the way you're envisioning.

Anyways, post here and provide feedback if the "Circues" track fits your vision.

Check out the tune, "Roustabout," by Beats Antique (bassnectar remix) I think this is probably exactly what you are looking for. I have the original song that he used to remix, if you want I could probably cook one up my self. Let me know if this is the vibe you are looking for, good luck...
-you can find the tune on beatport, you can listen to almost the entire track.

hey baydestrian,
yeah, i actually have that Roustabout track, and that's definitely the vibe i'm lookin' for. not all five tracks that we use need to be so overtly "circusy" but it'd be great if one or two of them were. if you wanted to take a crack at a mix, that'd be great. the one thing that would strengthen bassnectar's mix for our purposes would be to lose the vocals i think. but i'd love to hear what you come up with if you're into it. thanks.
