Post by mr. messer » Tue Sep 26, 2006 1:18 am

alright

i just got into a weird argument with a total cock about the concept of irony.

is the fact that Chef calls himself Chef ironic? what with him being a big black man n all (tho im not sure if that was their point.)

i dont think its irony.

it aint is it??

if it is.. explain!

i think irony would be if he was murdered by a chef.

or if his woman left him for a chef.

No, it's not ironic at all. And it wouldn't be irony if he was murdered by a chef or if his woman left him for a chef.

What would be ironic was if he was in a plane crash and ended up on an island in the middle of nowhere with a few survivers, and the group needed someone to cook the food they found but Chef couldn't actually cook so they starved to death.

Irony = he's called chef but he can't cook. Although for all I know he can.

It`s around 1997. Chef and his friend Pope are sitting down in front of the TV.

Chef: I`m looking for a new nickname. Something unique and cool yeah, but nothing too stupid

Pope: Well, you should think about what your unique features are. For one, you really like cooking...how about something like Chef?

Chef: Nice one! That sounds decent enough. Instantly recognisable, yet crazysexycool! And so very unique. I reckon when anybody says "Chef" from now on everyone will know they`re talking about me. I just hope that the nickname Chef isn`t used for a character voiced by a famous soul singer - like Isaac Hayes or someone - in an American animated series that`ll go on to become world famous and overwhelm my future fame! No chance of that though is there.

Pope: So, Chef it is then Chef mate. Eh, turn on channel 4 yeah. There`s that new series called South Park or something. I heard it`s well good.

Chef: Alright...where`s the bloody remote when you need it?

A few minutes later...

Pope: Wow, that`s ironic.

Its all Alanis Morisette's fault.

Although it was perhaps ironic that a song called 'Ironic' contained hardly a trace of irony. Maybe that was the point...

gravious, are we the same person? I've listened to the same music as you, played the same computer games and watched the same Ed Burns comedy routine on a Channel 5 program about the Montreal comedy festival about 5 years ago. I just need to be able to make the same quality tunes as you now.

Interestingly, or perhaps not, in Japanese there aren't seperate words for sarcasm and irony, just one (hiniku) that means both.

most americans really dont know what "ironic" means, and usually when they say something is ironic, they really should be saying that it is unfortunate, like in that stupid alanis morissete song.

oh, and people use the word "literally" wrong ALL the time too.

"i literally shit my pants"

id like to see that
