The Long Tail is descibed pretty well on wikipedia and here is an explaination by Chris Anderson at a Long Now seminar. I'm not sure what they're talking about though, I dunno what a long tail virus would be (perhaps a description of supply and demand in a market facing infinite replication relatively free of transportation on storage costs, but virus?) and the Operating System of Audio Social Reality sounds like it could be the totality of music events, releases (indie and big four), radio, file sharing, second hand, word of mouth etc etc, but it could something else entirely cos is and audio futurology a futurology about or audio or futurology as audio.
I wanna hear the whole thing, anyone got a links?

The full length versions are'nt up anywhere yet - if they exist. I am after them.
It's possible similar material will be in Kode's book, but who knows?

It was pretty deep.
Essentially (but not as well explained):
There is a pro and con discussion going on in economic circles about the long tail theory (do the numbers stack up, what to do about it etc).
K9 and K.E's position was that it doesn't matter if it is true or not because the theory itself is a way of trying to ensure that our vision of the future is restricted to commerce - it is a virus whose main intention is for us to see things in a particular way, whether or not the prediction itself comes true.
They were kind of citing afro-futurism and things like the 'ardkore continuum as possible (more open) ways of considering things in general but music in particular.
It was a bit of a mad weekend, all told.
Hopefully there will be more documentation because a lot of it was great. Steve's book is out on MIT in 6 months apparently but I think the text they delivered on Friday is new.
Steve also has an installation going in Berlin on sonic warfare which is pretty cool.

Sounds interesting, I would read all this but I better keep to my 18th century shiz for now otherwise my tutors won't be happy. That Chris Anderson fellow looks like the Stasi officer in The Lives of Others though, if that's any use to anyone.Funky Stanton wrote:spooKs wrote:Don't really know what's going on there but I'd love to go!

Hyperdub's concept is that 'hardcore' music is like a virus. It exists, but then it has to mutate or it dies out.
Like... Hip-Hop/Ragga/Jungle/D'n'B/Garage/Grime/Dubstep/Funky....
It's why Kode9's next single is basically 'evil' funky. He's like "Okay, I did Dubstep... what happens if I try some Funky Tunes..."
hey all!
we are working on a podcast for the complete eshun/goodman lecture.
gonna be up on AP blog (http://audiopoverty.de/) in the next couple days.
cheers, enz

Doesn't it just ensure that our commercial audio future is restricted to commerce? It's not stopping anyone creating art if they want to, it just relates to commerce doesn't it? I understand how long tail economics raise issues related to copyright extension that impact directly on certain art forms, but doesn't commerce in this sense just relate to commercial endeavours and not to audio entirely? I can't see how the big lobster claw of corporate optimism and pessimism of audio unit producers can really threaten the OS of our Audio Social Reality. Aren't people just ditching the old OS and installing some open source stuff that actually works? Copyright extension is wrong and damaging, but watching record companies flail around in their death throes after having stubbornly refused to embrace reality for so long is funny isn't it? I mean live performers suffered when radio came out, they tried to have it regulated etc. but technology won out, just as it is likely to do today, tough if your business model is no longer vaild. Information does want to be free and I can't see how it's not going to be, you can still make art but you just might not be able to have it as your business.WOOFAH wrote: K9 and K.E's position was that it doesn't matter if it is true or not because the theory itself is a way of trying to ensure that our vision of the future is restricted to commerce - it is a virus whose main intention is for us to see things in a particular way, whether or not the prediction itself comes true.

sounds awfully postmodern to me.WOOFAH wrote:K9 and K.E's position was that it doesn't matter if it is true or not because the theory itself is a way of trying to ensure that our vision of the future is restricted to commerce - it is a virus whose main intention is for us to see things in a particular way, whether or not the prediction itself comes true.
hegemonic theory 101. got completely wrapped up in this stuff at uni. the idea is more powerful than the reality that the idea conceptualises...

Currently setting up an archive/documentation section on Audio Poverty conference. Step by step all the material accumulated over the weekend in Berlin will be up for download.
Starting with the full audio for the exquisite Artist Talk that took place Saturday morning:
DJ/Rupture (New York), Brian Shimkovitz (aka Awesome Tapes From Africa) (New York), John Eden (Woofah, London), Kodwo Eshun (London) talk about the intermashing of poprization and interverse financilization of ‘new world music’, the role of blogs as hosts through which markets arrive by a discourse of pleasure/fandom, why germans are more exotic than africans and why there is no reason (at least for listeners) for pessimism in music.
Go here to download/listen: http://audiopoverty.de/?p=850
Full audio for the Kode9/Kodwo Eshun talk to follow.
