The desensitisation part is a somewhat correct action though by one of the specialists (where hyperacusis sufferers are played white/pink noise at gradually increasing volumes to readjust their ears to everyday volumes. You use a hearingaid which task is to apply only the noise and not amplify sound as in a nomral hearing aid. You have to be concistent though, you have to use the aid every day for a very long time if it's gonna have any effect. They do the same thing with tinnitus patients.
It's also correct that a person with hyperacusis should never use earplugs on a daily basis. It's almost like using dark sunglasses all year round so you're even more sensible to light when you do take them off.
So to sum up his story:
He had some pretty bad luck with doctors telling him strange things with no relevance what's so ever. You can't give any medication for hyperacusis! If you get depressed cos of it, then yes perhaps something to treat that, but it doesn't solve the actual problem.
So he got stressed out, which is normal, and made it worse by using plugs all the time. So when he finally met a decent doc he relaxed and took the advice he was given. It's a known fact that stress makes it worse and being in limbo with this sort of thing ain't fun.
I had a patient, a school teacher, who had the same problem. She was so afraid of sound that she was using plugs all the time. She even had them on when she first visited me. I can understand the instict to do so, which is why it's so important to provide the true info about this. Had to break it down piece by piece for her, explaining how this works etc. She was so afraid and she was crying cos she didn't want to take them off. She did listen to me and started to get better.
Whey!!!

The only thing that worked for me when I first had tinnitus was to 'massage' my outer ear, just kind of moving my finger around all the curvy bits. This makes a soothing noise that takes your attention away from the "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee". You'll get used to it after a bit - for the first two weeks or so I wanted to rip my ear off when I was trying to get to sleep though.Abs wrote:Whey!!!

everything is just really muffled in my right ear, as well as the constant ringing.
when im listening to music it sounds like my headphones don't work in the right speaker.
is there no way they can use medical science to cure this?? or to stand the little hairs back up again so the ringing will stop?

I think there has been some very limited success in clinical trials with stem cells (no idea of the science behind it, I'm afraid). But I think a 'cure' is a long, long way off.
With everything sounding a little bit muffled, it might just be fluid or 'glue ear', or something like that - either way it might not be tinnitus. Visit your GP and see what they say, you might just need your ears syringing or something like that.

What would your recommendation be for when / how often to wear ear plugs?Gena wrote:What kind of fake doctor did he visit, the first one??DROKKR wrote:i found it gena, it was originally in a post from some welsh guy who makes minimal techno but his doc has told him that he is going... poor fucker. his doc told him about the blog!

Antibiotics for a perforation on the eardrum!! That's a physical damage that heals itself or get operated if it's a big hole. It has nothing to do with bacterias
Plus the doctor didn't even make any further examination... that could get him reported!

i mean obviously wearing them in the dance / at a gig / when your playing out is a must but should they be worn when playing loud music at home?
what sort of Db level is enough to damage your ears?
this may sound daft, but i've had the same for agespk- wrote:there's a really noticeable lack of bass in my left ear when i listen to headphones nowadays
i put it right down to my ears, but after swapping headphones it solved the problem. i tend to knacker up electronic stuff lots and lots
god knows what i do with headphones but its the 3rd pair where this has happened, but i'm sure its to do with headphones, try swapping pairs
my sennheisser in-ears [which cost me £40 at the time] have done this twice, as well as breaking
sennheissers do my fucking head in, they just break all the time on me

I've had non stop ringing ears for about 3 years now.
Went to loads of gigs and had them ringing for a few days after but they recovered.
Then went round my mates once and he was playing guitar really badly and really loud through his new Marshall Stack and it made my ears ring and has never stopped since. BASTARD.
It was really bad for about 4 months that it bothered me quite a bit but it has died down a lot and I only hear it faintly now when I'm in bed. Everytime I am exposed to a loud noise now, even if it is just for a second they start ringing more again for the rest of the day then die down again when i wake up.
From then on, I always wear earplugs during gigs and airshows and stuff, it might seem awkward for some or people might think you're a pussy for wearing them, but it's definitely worth it. Once you've done certain damage to your ears they won't be the same again.
I have only used Temporary earplugs but when I have a spare bit of cash I think i'll definitely buy a decent set that can be reused and that don't affect quality of sound.

i haven't developed it properly yet but i'm takin steps to make sure it never gets worse. every so often one of my ears would switch n it sounds like someones jammed a finger in there and i can hear a high pitched ringing noise, really unpleasnt but most of all it worries the shit out of me.
I also play in a band, regularly wear loud headphones, attend live metal events/dubstep raves so either way i'm really not helping my case. Live shows and band practcie especially fuck up hearing due to the untamed frequencies+dynamics being thrown around by a massive PA in a small ass room so i've started wearin ear plugs etc.
but yeah nip tinnitus in the bud
