Rate my demo ...

Post by hans blix » Mon Mar 16, 2009 4:20 pm

Hi all,

Thought I'd share with you the demo I've been handing out to some DJ's/Producers recently. Thanks to the people who gave advice on how to best prepare a CD, it really did make a difference :).

http://www.soundcloud.com/hansblix

I've numbered the tracks one to 1 to 5 for sake of simplicity. I appreciate all the praise/criticism you can throw at me! So far, I've only received positive feedback, though a couple comments have been on the mixdown. (I mixed these down on some £20 Sony headphones, waiting for my KRK's ..)

Anyway, cheers to all who check all 5 tracks out!
Peace

Ok 1st one, sounds bad-ass but I miss the kick
2nd, too little bass. But nice happy track though!
3rd, heavy shit, wobble is a bit too much for my liking. Not sure about the clap
4th experimental, would like to hear a good snare in this one, cause this one is no good:P way too soft and powerless
5th nice intro with the guitar-kinda thing, nice wobble. And the sudden stop @ 2.22 is a bit weird drop in compensates though:D

Overall you did a good job:D

1) I couldn't help but feel the kicks could be a bit more jumpy, it'll work on the dance floor a lot better! That bass is nuts though, samples are entertaining (spesh the monkey scream)

2) Agree with Skyscraper, great happy, dancey tune! Really like this one a lot.

3) This one is dirty, feel the mix could be a bit better though for some reason? I dunno it just sounds a bit to loud and agressive like everythings fighting to be louder than eachother(maybe thats the whole point)

4) Nice little mover, much prefer this one over #1 and #3 personally, moves a lot more fluid and really got my head nodding, mix sounds great too - that kick is filthy and a bigger snare would just make it better! Love the synth what comes in about 1:35. 2nd drop is nuts.

5) Guitar intro is great, really like the drum choice in this one! The bass seems abit to tight a little touch of verb would be my preference.. Other than sick tune! I would play it.

Infact, I'd play all these tunes - few little opinions I had were merely personal preference of how I would write them myself - these would work on the dance floor, easily.. Hopefully people are playing them after handing CDs out - you deserve the play :)

no.4 is me personal fave. the drops are illin. had my head goin up and down crazy like! i saw u used the same samples as saxon by chase and status in one of the tunes. the tunes are all a bit samey, the synth seems to sound real similar on them all.

NUMBER 3 :o :o :o :o

Really like all the tracks, I can tell you put heart n soul into it and they're all equally sick.

Number 1 despite what some have said i think the kicks sounds good, it's a subtle kick but still punches which i think sounds cool.

Number 2 i'm really feelin the groove of the tune, but the bass sound is a bit over baring, 0:50 onwards is just :o so sick!

Number 4's a nice on as well, I think ur basslines (not the subs) could be a bit tighter sounding, they just don't feel full enough but if that was ur intention no worries i guess it gives it a certain character. Think with number 4 you might be over doing it a little bit with the samples makes the tune sound a bit clutered and a bit much to take in. But you space em out nicely so aitn too much of a problem.

5's equally as filthy as four, i'd spend some time eq'ing and mixing them on monitors for good measure but everything still sounds good just need some tweaking n then it'll be a masterpiece

that's my opinion anyways

Hey thanks for the practical tips! So true about the snare on the 4th one. I've now added a harder snare, and it sounds alot nicer now :D

In that first track, I tried to make some dark tune, with babies crying/laughing, weird voices and monkey screams. I've since re-arranged some stuff and to make it work better. And thanks for the encouraging words man!

It's funny, cos I put that sample in that track cos it says "Willesden Posse Ya Ready?" and I'm from Willesden and I thought it was perfect. Then about a week later I heard Saxon on youtube and I had to do a double-take, and was like, "I swear thats the same sample I used recently?" lol anyway, but I kept it in just cos I couldn't find anything better ..

Thanks for the tips! Your right, I did put it all my heart and soul into em. I shoulda done what Depone said and waited on my monitors though, I think I was over eager to have them heard.

Anyway, it's sick that every one has their own personal favourite, and thanks everyone for your feedback, it's helped out alot. I've made another 5 new tracks recently which are all dancefloor-oriented, but ill wait till my monitors come to show you lot.

Anyone else got any feedback?? Cheers

It seems like everyone is just putting all the same samples chase and status are using on their records. Have you heard the snoop dogg dubstep mix of Eastern jam, it is the most retarded thing I have ever heard! I think if something is released, especially a big tune like saxon, you should try to stay away from the recognizable sample from the song. It's the kind of thing that kills dubstep and makes everyone sound the same. Every time chase and status release a song, it seems like there it 30 remix's and everyone is using the same sample in their song. I am all for sampling, just try to be original with it.

All about numba four for me :)

I like the samples etc

The other tunes rely on a style of bass I personally don't enjoy to much Image

They all seem produced well enough to me though. Good stuff! :)
