Weird RnB

Post by linear » Mon Mar 23, 2009 11:10 pm

Right, ive been getting quite obsessed with listening to Oops! by Hudson Mohawke, and that Keisha Cole remix by Rustie which Blackdown and Dusk played on their show ages ago....

I was also feeling Erykah Badus new shit last year, which for that genre went off on a kinda mad tangent i though.

Therefore, can anyone post up their favourite RnB tunes with different / off kilter / amazing production.

They dont have to be in the Wonky vein, but lets get some RnB appreciation going here folks!

check these albums:
olivierdaysoul - kilowatt
erik rico - journey back to me/a higher frequency
kissey asplund - plethora

also i know kissey asplund did a track with rustie and a few with dorian concept.

i'd like to know some more quality rnb like this too tbh.

edit: kettel made a dope 4 track rnb remix EP called making gentle love to famous ladies, check that out.

guido sort of makes RnB stuff though its not really right to label his music into one genre imo.

But anyway check out Beutiful Complication

Guido on the Buttons, very nice. 8)

edit: that mixdown sounds horrible on her myspace, maybe its still up on Guido's but trust its a lush track.

Rustie remix of Kissey Asplund.

I always equate soul with older music, from the Motown era, 1960s and 1970s. I listen to all that stuff loads as well, but im talking more about contemporary rnb/ neo-soul (which i guess is like rnb without the fun).

Anyway, will check these recommendations tomorrow. Been loving female vocal stuff loads at the moment, even Skreams pretty straight-down-the middle la roux remix.

I listening to a Von B tune on redeye the other day, sounded pretty sick, kinda housey vibes with a nice vocal on top.

Well, we've got Sa-Ra obviously. Their album went pretty "Meeh" to me, but a lot of the stuff Benji B has been playing is actually pretty dope. Wherever those tracks are.

Obviously, raid the Aaliyah greatest hits. Still friggin amazing.

A lot of Darkstar really is pretty much R&Bish Garage.

There were a few tracks produced for Amerie that were bugged out. Not enough though. Keri Hilson usually comes out with a few interesting songs...

And though it doesn't quite count, the DVA remix of "Money In My Pocket", simply for how well he refixed up Daniel Merriweather.

At whoever mentioned Sa Ra - yea i completely agree their stuff is usually quite worthy but boring...im never that excited by it.

Darkstar Lillyliver - Ive got this on vinyl although i actually think its their worst tune...double drops well with night though...

Darkstar in general are amazing though.

@Crowley Head - Amerie was awsome. "One thing" was one of the best tracks that came out in 2005 (?). Can you imagine how many underground hip hop producers were screwing cos they missed that break?

Keep em coming guys, a few more links, youtube or otherwise would be appreciated!

hmmm the real deal is, they actually have tons of beats that have never seen the light of day, the beat stuff is really great and really fun and puts a smile on your face. there is no denying that they are talented.

a lot of the so-called "big" tunes really leave me cold and i find them super-over produced to the point of being saccharine. i'm not a big fan of smoov production in general, well not smoov in that way.

there are literally a couple of sa ra tunes that have grown on me though, i ended up being really pleased i copped them.

if you wanna talk "that" sort of tip, well J Davey are unfuckwitable.

Not that "out there" but compared to radio R&B these are a little left field

Platinum Pied Pipers (just saw them last night too bad the clubs sound was awful for a live band)

Dudley Perkins

Georgia Anne Muldrow
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're going to see some serious shit.
