Free hosting for your tunes :)

Post by negativefeedback » Mon Oct 02, 2006 12:04 pm

If anyone would prefer not to use these sendspace.com, yousendit.com, megaupload.com whatever sites you're more than welcome to use my hosting, i have more bandwidth than you guys could ever use up, so i think it'll be fine :)

FTP DEETS:
Host: dubstepradio.com
Port: 21
Login: dubplates
Pass: hosting

Once you upload a file it will become available at this address:
http://www.dubstepradio.com/dubplates/track.name.mp3

Hope this helps!

Really good idea, but, how can I gurantee you or someone else isn't going to steal my work?

Also I believe I have MORE bandwidth than you!

Well, somone could just as easily steal a person's work who posted it on Sendspace.com. The intent here was not a cock size contest, or to steal tunes, I was mearly trying to give people a place to host things. I think a public FTP could be very benificial to this community.

No one can steal your track from sendspace etc unless you have the link, and I very doubt the hosting company is interested in stealing Dubstep tracks. Where you on the other hand may be!

As I said, it's a good idea and I might even use it.

I actually been thinking about doing something like this except witha propa interface just for the dubstep scene.

There are som many quality producers sharing tracks for free on this forum that i thought it would be good to have a permentnt place to host all of them permenantly so they don't become unavailable when the links expire.

I also have a shitload of badwidth, so maybe we should all put our heads together and come up with an equivalent to barefiles but for dubs instead of mixes. Obviously it's only for people that don't mind giving their tunes away for free but there are plenty of them about, and who knows, maybe some of the bigger producers might end up putting a few of their oterwise unreleased bits up out of the kindness of their hearts... lol!

i'm pretty serious about this and i could happily host the thing if someone could helf me build the interface and manage it a bit...

big it

I don't mind helping out with scripts. I wrote everything that you see on Barefiles so you can kinda see what I'm like.

Big up those who helped me though. I couldn't do everything alone.

So yeah if you want help with scripting / database for all the files hosted then I'll be on that.

If you want permanent hosting, there's always Fileurn. Apparently they don't delete these so might be useful if someone does want something more permanent.
Hmm....

I was actuelly gonna do this at some point this week. @ Deapoh. Its why i was asking about the design of bare files. Need some one to design it. I know a few people who would do it for free. I thought i would run the idea past you first as you have expirience in such things.
I'm well up for this and have the time to run it. If we get are heads together it could be really good. It would be a one stop shop for demo's/tracks. Seeing as i'm doing about three tracks a week it would be really helpfull to have somewhere to showcase them. If we get all the producers behind this we could do it for very little cost to ourselves . Who's up for it then? It would be a couple a quid each for the hosting. I don't see any problems with this.

Self-promotion! I like it!

Thats why barefiles is so good because it gives people access to hundreds of mixes worldwide.

Maybe this could be done within dubstepforum eg. a download page within the forum, giving people a chance to comment on the beats and give the producers feedback.

Anything that helps the scene grow is sick imo.

So what im getting from this convo is that ya'll want a yousendit.com style uploading template, with randomly generated static links that link to each file. So its a little harder to find each file directly. This is easy as shit to make, and im sure Deeps or myself or others here could make it in a few hours. But someone please clarify for me what the privacy differance is here?
1) You have public files listed in a public forum for download by anyone, but in a convoluded way, where you have to track down the yousendit.com link in pages and pages of forum archives.
2) You have the files hosted on a public website, with a much easier interface on how to track them down, like barefiles.com
Beyond the non-existant differance in privacy that you're all bikering about, aren't most of the producers making this stuff primarily concearned with making a name for themselves, by getting their content out to more audiences? Partial security is the same as no security at all, people will always find a way to infiltrate it if they really want to.

Thanks,
Adrian

Basically that would be good yeah. But also have an option where users can keep it private. And I have a script which I'm still working on that basically hides all the files even if you know the exact link. So you HAVE to download it via the site.

As i give most of my tracks away the privacy thing doesn't bother me. The way i see it the more people that hear my tracks the better. I see it as positive promotion. I do know a lot of producers would not be happy with this arrangement though. One way around this would be to have clips of tracks of each producer on the board, have the producers name with a link to all of his/hers tracks or clips. You could then ether pm that producer to send a accsess code for the full 320/wav/flack. Or have a system where by the person pays a small fee to down load the full track. I think the leter propositon is a little flawed though.
The way i do it now is put up a 160 file up on the forum and any body who wants the 320 can just pm me for it. This is a very labourious way of doing it and the links only last a week. Which means you have to spend a good few hours each week sending your files to yousendit or whatever and then sending the links to various people. If all the files were in one place it would make it a hell of a lot quicker to get your music too people.

What do you reckon?

my personal vision for this, before i even saw this tread or talked about it, was just purely a public place for those producers that were happy to share their work for free... as i know there are many about who aren't in it for the money or fame, and who just wanna get their tracks heard.
Basically just a simple interface where any registered producer can upload any number of 320s and just leave them there to be downloaded by anyone. Have a search engine for tracks/artists and that's that.

I know fuck all about scripts and that so i dunno how it would work technically but i think it would be a great resource for all DJs and a great was for unsigned producers to get their tracks out to the masses.

Bear in mind - just cos you give one track away for free doesn't mean you have to give away every one you make.

Anyway, whatever form this takes, i'm in.... time i gave something back anyway.

peace
