2step/garage + logic pro

Post by lvc » Sat Mar 28, 2009 5:39 pm

i'm currently trying to make a 2step/garage track through logic pro right now and i'm failing hard every time i try to make the beat. it just doesnt sound right at all. i downloaded all of the sample packs i could find and i tried to recreate loops in ultrabeat but it just sounds bad everytime i try!

can someone tell me the secret to making a 2step beat?!

dont use midi

....use single sample drum hits and quantize & arrange yourself by hand.

& shuffle it up.

You have to use triplets and shuffle to get the beats right. I dont know how you shuffle in logic, I use ableton. :(

Get a groove template from a previous garage track, add your own samples, add/delete what you want/dont want??
Never used Logic myself so cant tell you exactly what to do but thats what I'd do in Cubase and Im sure there'll be similar functions.

Give it a shuffle feel by creatively using triplets like everyone else said.

I use ableton but most DAW drum programming has some form of grid or piano roll with a quantizing grid option..

This grid is 8th note Triplets.

Punch it in. See if it's what you want. Cos it's what all of us think you mean.

If that's too hard just use the loop. lol.

both ultrabeat and the exs24 have great starting points for 2 step drums. i mean, shit, they're called UK garage kit and 2step kit.

2step is all about heavy syncopation and swing.

Play your basic kick and snare in using your midi keyboard over 4 bars, quantise them (16th) then ad some off beat snares (different snares to the main) using the pencil tool. just place then randomly between the kick and main snare, you'll soon hear what works and what doesn't. Add some hats on the up notes, select them all and apply a shuffle. Sorted :D
