I'm new to dubstep - love it, where do I get it, what's good

Post by geist » Tue Oct 03, 2006 7:09 am

ez

been into dnb for years and years - close to a decade really. My walls are full of dnb records and fond memories so don't try to convert me please! this isn't an either/or thing

I've just bought a few records, tried em out at a party (mostly people stood about, curious - I'm in the US - near Chicago). I need to figure out this genre a bit more before venturing into spinning this out - need to wrap my head around it. dnb comes like second nature but dubstep trips me out

anyways I first liked the tracks with the weird wobbly business b/c at that tempo you could really get the full impact off of the bass, but from hearing online mixes I'm liking a lot of the more abstract and lush/atmospheric tracks

so where do you guys get your records? I ordered from chemical records and redeye along with a dnb order.... but are there record stores that have a catalog that goes deeper into the crates, so to speak? Where's the weird non mainstream dubstep at??? Also if anyone can point me to some of the seminal/classic/must have tracks to keep an eye out for on ebay... when i get into a genre I want to know it at its roots ... I wish there was more written about dubstep all I see is a wiki entry and some posts on forums...

it also seems like this genre readily lends itself to being mixed with certain other genres.... like straight up reggae/dub, some world music, and cinematic/ambient type music........can anyone point me to mixes where this is done or attempted (instead of mixing dubstep track after dubstep track??)

any help appreciated. bigups all the people posting good mixes - they are a real eye opener!!!

There was no need, Ramadanman pointed out a good database thats on this forum. Covers where to buy records, mp3s etc etc.

Also there is a good working search function so I suggest you use that before posting something which we see every day!

Not meant to be a harsh post, just stating how it is.

weird non-mainstream dubstep - there isn't really any, seeing as dubstep is not mainstream. practically every new dubstep release is well publicised and easily available.

try this mix for some slightly interesting mixing of genres - http://www.barefiles.com/download.php?id=822

old classics? try old dmz, big apple, hotflush, etc going for stupid prices on ebay. look out for cd releases, especially from tempa - roots of dubstep and all the dubstep allstars cds are essential.

Ez Geist,

I would recommend downloading a few mixes / radio shows from barefiles, then by surveying the t/listing you can work out the artists / labels you are into.

I would say that you should try and listen to every release really, although some artists have a certain style there is still a huge amount of diversity in their work.

I disagree most strongly :D

Welcome geist, another familiar forum face..

Getting into dubstep isnt that different to getting into anything else. Listen to radio, pay attention, go to raves, buy tunes.. redeye, boomkat and rooted should do you proud as far as shops go.

Yikes. I'd say a lot lower but then I am a contrary bastard. Said this the other day and someone thought I was joking. I think most genres probably have about 10% classic, 10% OK, 60% filler and about 20% utter shite. Dubstep's no different to that IMO.

Not causing offense to anyone that likes every dubstep tune ever but I do think that's a bit of an unprovable stat quoted above.
Hmm....

Probably by now you listened to it but im sure alot of people on this forum really got into the sound after listening to the breezeblock dubstep special which you can download on barefiles, i think that gives a great introduction to the different angles of the dubstep world and most of the tracks played on that show are actually avaliable to buy.
