how did u decide 'yes im going to be a serato dj'
i think serato is a great tool as a producer, to try out new tunes and hear them on a system before I cut a dub. Too many times i've went and cut a dub, realizing that i wanted to change something in the tune once I heard it loud. This being said, I'll still never stop cutting dubs or buying vinyl. I can't be bothered to fuck with computers at gig. They can't be trusted.

The only thing that really DOES affect those things, is the compositional/programming skills of the DJ. And those will translate whether using vinyl, CDs, serato/FS/torq, Ableton or anything else.UFO over easy wrote:sounds cool but i still don't think that this necessarily results in a greater ability to "affect the dancefloor and the vibe of the night" than a good vinyl DJTeReKeTe wrote: to ben UFO, i'm approaching using other tools as part of a live aspect-- real-time remixing, building live drum loops, etc; not just using software to match 2 recorded bits.
Which is why debates about which one is better are fruitless and dumb.
You either rock a room or you don't. Again I say, the medium is not the message.
Here, have a free tune:

Easiest way is to prepare for your set by building a playlist in itunes then sticking to it in serato.TeReKeTe wrote:
well that's the big thing about cutting dubs-- you can only cut the best stuff, and thus you only play the best stuff. takes a bit of self-discipline in serato to stay on that straight an narrow.
Same principle as if your were backing your record bag
few things ive noticed about serato that i dont like.
i like the rane mixers were you just plug in a usb cable but until every club has one it sucks.
your pulling out plugs out the back of the mixer. which isnt good to do every weekend. someone always plugs it back up wrong. sound goes dead when someone is plugging there box in, dead slicence till he figures it out(it has happened to me)
i dont get how a wav going through your lap top to the serato box to the serato plate then back out your pre amp in the mixer. just too many links were something can fuck up. usb mixers make sences though. rather just play dubs on cd that you can throw away later
taking a laptop to club after a few beers or spilling a drink. trouble
plugged a hd in a mates pc n tried beat juggling. pc shat itself though i do hear macs are a bit more reliable
put on a gig with various formats throughout the night. first dude cds vinyl, next trcktor den serato den dubplates. engineering nightmare. really could hear the sound quailty differance between them all. did notice serato was a little bit quieter compared to vinyl.
dont get me wrong i think serato is great n ill prob switch over soon enough
i guess im just still a bit wary
gotta take the good wit the bad n always bring spare vinyl

Personally I love it.. I'm not going to sit here and say it's the best option - just works for me.
Yeah I find that too - will have to crack it around 2 clicks higher on the channel gain to match with vinyl played in the same set.kammo wrote:did notice serato was a little bit quieter compared to vinyl
Traktor DJ sounds damn good on proper systems.
Reasos for buying Traktor
- I was already playing digitally via CDJ's due to the price of cutting dubs in Texas.
- My car got broken into and my box of CD's was stolen
- you still get the vinyl feel/control
- expanded capability.
I never get dropouts.
The sound quailty of Native Instruments Traktor is superior to that of Serato & Torq due to a higher kHz transfer rate.
So everyone acting like all DVS setups are the same, you are 100% wrong.

I transferred over due to lack of funds. I collect oldschool jungle vinyl and buy dubstep MP3's. It was also really good for border crossings. I did not have customs asking me "Why I was carrying a bag full of dinnerplates across the border" and threatening to ban me because I was working illegally without a visa
I still buy the dubstep tracks that I really love on vinyl.
However that being said I feel that I lose a little bit of my interaction with the audience not playing on vinyl. HOWEVER it sure makes it easier to play World of Warcraft when I get bored of my set

I use Torq & love it, and I think that people need to get over all of the debate. Some like the DVS route, and more will be headed there shortly. Others do not like the DVS route. Whatever, who cares?
The thing I love about the vinyl sound debate is that many people argue that vinyl is the true sound of the music, but 99.9% of the tunes we spin started as 1's & 0's anyhow.

had serato a year now and used it playing out at gigs up to 5hrs at a time with the minimum fuss couple of drop outs but on the whole
its one superb bit of kit would recommend it also its less to lug about which is kool by me no more back pain
buy it its worth it
peace
