no need to pencil in notes, just use the arpreggiatorexile wrote:one way to achive this kind of effect is to,
use the nn19
pencil in loads of 1/64 notes in the piano roll
automate the sample start on the nn19, so that each note triggers further into the sample
not sure if thats what is going on in the youtube video, but its somewhere
near!
Here is a combi I made with the help of a youtube video. My version is slightly different to the youtube one though, that was more of a glitch machine. I have put this up on various sites. It was done with Reason 3, so it should work in 4.
How to use: Load sample into the nn19, draw note in sequencer.
Controls:
Dial 1 - Sample start position.
Dial 2 - Glitch speed
Dial 3 - Sample length
Dial 4 - Pitch (the sample will be the same pitch, what ever note you use, you need this dial to adjust the pitch)
All dials can obviously be automated, which can creat some nice fx IE. Backwards play, jumping position, timing of glitch ect.
There is also a delay in the combi, try adjusting the setting for other fx.

Please leave feedback. I'm always interested in your comments/sugestions.

Drawing in small notes on the step sequencer is a fairly good way of doing it. It means that you can change the pitch of the sample without having to automate the pitch bend or sample 'semi' & 'octave' knobs.
Other options for triggering the gate include using the matrix, arp or an lfo.
I used an LFO to trigger the gate.
Something to consider is smoothing. Options for this include turning up the release time on the Amp ADSR and setting a polyphony of 4 or so. Other options include using a delay, reverb or comb filter to cover up any artifacts between 'segments'.
Use the vocoder to make formant changes to the sample.
You may have noticed that the sample playback rate speeds up when it is being controlled by an ADSR? Sexy use of the spider cv splitter can be used to over come this.
One drawback of the NN-19 is that samples can only be a certain length before they extend past the range of the sample start position knob. I haven't timed it properly, but it's only around 1.5 seconds!
That patch you built is fairly good. Why not use the pitch bend to change the pitch insteqad of wasting an entire Combi control for it? You could tie that control to an FX parameter instead.
I had to remove that combi background image however. I found it difficult to work with.
Good stuff people!

how do you make and install custom combinator background images?futures_untold wrote:Drawing in small notes on the step sequencer is a fairly good way of doing it. It means that you can change the pitch of the sample without having to automate the pitch bend or sample 'semi' & 'octave' knobs.
