man needs some speaker wiring advice innit

Right, here's one for ya....

found a 500w sub in a skip yesterday and its got a Speakon/Neutrik cable input on it and my amp has only got banana plugs on it (them windy-roundy cable things). the problems is thus...

the sub input (speakons) has 3 pins - positive, 0/ground and negative - whereas the banana plugs only have positive and negative. could i simply get a speakon cable, chop one end off, just use the +/- on the banana plugs and miss out the 0/ground bit? There is a screw for ground (GND) on the amp so should i connect the speakon ground bit to that? If i dont ground it, apart from maybe some ground lift/hum, shouldnt be a problem should it?

Find a wiring diagram ffs , be they 2pole or 4pole they should be a piece of piss to wire up correctly, just pretend the other end has a speakon too and wire accordingly innit.

EDIT: just read your post again, why buy a cable just to cut it in half and do a Bodgit & Scarper job on it you belm!?!? Buy a speakon plug and wire into it like any other sane individual would

But ask yourself why a sub was skipped anyway, does it actually work?

And is it passive/active, a 500w passive sub would need about 750w of amp behind it to allow enough headroom for any peaks in signal, so a normal hifi amp would stand a high chance of being irrepairably damaged by a 909 kick. If it's active you want to cross your fingers that nothing more complicated than the fuse has gone.

of course the sub works otherwise it'd have been pointless posting !

I tested it by taking the +/- output of the Amp and placing it on the +/- inputs of the sub's XOver; worked a treat. That's why im asking the question. Its passive and the load is the same as the Amp output (8ohm) so providing i dont thrape the level i cant see it being a problem.

I just wanted to check with the forum boys that my method would do. The hi-fi Amp is out of skip too so dont really care if its bodgit bizznizz - can you guess where i work?

LOL, well that's alright then, although peaks in signal will cause the speaker to try and draw more power than the amp could provide ~> damage!

An industrial size charity shop or a skip/recycling place I presume, good finds if so, but you must get through all sorts in that work yuh?
