Entering the world of Production

Post by germskiller » Sun Apr 05, 2009 12:04 am

I have started making dubstep and finally felt I've made something worthy of posting on this forum I know how harsh the criticism can be and am willing to take that risk to improve my skills in future tunes (maybe i shouldn't quit my day job).

Please post turn criticism please anybody who can spend 3mins of their time to listen!

All feedback welcome!

p.s. I haven't a clue why it's such bad quality on sound cloud (it sounds fine on normal players). Plus haven't mastered yet (I've never done it before) so feedback will help I'm no good at ambience so haven't added anything to fill the gaps.

hope I've covered all the bases. WAGWAAAAAN

:D

Overall it's nice for first (?) tune. Important thing I was told when I posted my first tune, was to really get that percussion down. Layer up and really emphasise the sound aswell as mixing it up, few effects couldnt hurt either, bit of reverb here and delay there can really add atmosphere.

Sounds like it could do with a bit of a funky swing in the drums.

Not give it a dubstep shuffle exactly, just might be nice. Sounds massive attack-esque vocally and some nice basslines that aren't really reinforced by the beat enough. A bit more variation wouldn't go a miss (just trying to find faults here as you asked) and that could be in any part, bass/vocals/drums whatever.

It sounds good though on the whole, you happy with the feel of it most importantly?

I love dubstep but can't seem to get out of my dnb rhythm habits haha if you can relate? Yeah I'm still trying to get my head around the overall sound of the drums and bass line to try and make them blend! Maybe if I loop the bass line and use midi map to the controls I could find the right sound?

i like it. especially the massive/thor esque sort of vocally bass line, its been used quite alot recently but works well here.
if i had to pick fault with it i'd say
it needs more atmosphere - its quite a dry mix, sounds almost 8-bit sort of chiptune style. could use some reverb perhaps
also it sounds like the lead square sort of sound is dominating a bit, perhaps keep it under control with some careful eq and compression just to make it a bit tighter.
i liked it mate, so keep it up - just more swing, shuffle and atmosphere to give it a bit more soul

Cheers Neurotik hopefully with all this help I can hopefully bring this tune up to true dub standards haha :)

I seem to get carried away and make everything too in your face and clouded instead of letting each part blend in :?
