need a mixer but getting a lot of conflicting advice from my mates

the ones who play hip hop swear by vestax

BUT

my mates who play dnb and house reckon the cross faders on the older models are a bit dodgy and have told me to check to go for behringer or pioneer

ANY ADVICE MUCH APPRECIATED!

are you trying to scratch and do other tricks? if so, go with a vestax, that's what they are made for. but if sound quality and solid mixing is your goal, Pioneer DJM-500 is the way to go, best mixer i've ever used, hands down.

also, how many channels do you want/need? how about built-in effects?

vestax is decent for scratching styles, but the sound quality is kinda tinny.
i prefer the rane 56, and pioneer's 707 & 909 are real nice, too, as far as 2-channel mixers go...if you think you may wanna get into scratching/turntablism and 2 channels will suffice, id vote for the pioneers.

I second that. Ranes are a lot more durable all around. The ttm56 crossfader is built to take a beating...check their website. The cut on their faders is a lot better too...full volume at 1mm on a Rane...full volume at 1/4 inch on a vestax. Go Rane! It's well worth the money. Their eqs are wicked too...vestax's eqs don't have a good cut on them.

my only problem with Ranes is everytime i've used one, the tab that keeps the fader knob on is so small and janky i end up throwing the knobs all over the dance floor lol!

especially the ones with the SICK filters (honestly the nicest filter i have ever used)

no competition in my opinion unless you want to scratch, in which case i would still go for an A&H Xone:02 but there are other mixers of this style that are just as good, i.e. Rane/Ecler

personally don;t feel vestax, shit sound and dodgy eqs compared to some of the higher end mixers

^^^^I played on an allen and heath this weekend, and it threw me off. Granted, for an in home mixer that you can take the time to get used to, it'd be sick. I just don't like big house style mixers. I don't need four tracks, I just need two. This one had four inputs, and the cdjs were on seperate tracks, and there was this tiny switch I didn't notice until halfway through my set that assigns what side of the fader you want the track applied to. I was cueing up a tune and realized that the song was on the system, so I just mixed with the volume faders, which were actually nobs. Wasn't feeling it, but it's the kinda thing that you could do really cool shit with if you get to play with it for a bit.

i feel like i can help..i teach dj tech. the xone 36 by alen and heath is a good all round mixer..has built in effects...4 channels + a mic input...has curve adgustment on cross fader so turntablests like me are happy with it.

Alt you can go for a pioneer 600 mixer, but im sure i read u dont like big mixers...in which case go for a rane mixer...im gettin http://www.rane.com/ttm57sl.html

the allen and heath in tribe is sick. it's got bloody LFOs which you can assign to a channel. nuts.

Had my Vestax PMC05 for over 6 years now, even tho i bought it originally for scratching the sound and quality of it is still amazing.

Go for Allen and Heath if you have the money, if not go for Vestax.... many other makes are destined to wear out/crossfaders need replacing/be completely fucked after a few years in my experience...

check out ecler nuo, good eqs, good sound, fx-in/ou, 2, 3 or 4 channelst ~ around 150euros per channel, 3 outputs (2 seperate master outs, chinch and xlr + 1 rec)
have my nuo2 for 6 months now, no complaints so far... sound, eqs & crossfader are way better than stanton sa-series, not exactly pioneer-level but almost while being a lot cheaper.
