Sub Bass?
I got some feedback from some random foreign guy on myspace the other week and he commented that my tunes lacked sub bass...
As he was no producer and I wasn't in the mood for discussion with people who didn't really know what they were talking about, I didn't feel obliged replying to this geezer...
My question here is - what would he have meant by my tunes lacking sub bass?

I assume a lot of you are making separate tracks from your wobble bass, LPFed versions of the wobble or sines following the same pattern?
Or are (what's classed as) sub basses following a different pattern to your wobbles altogether?
I think I basically just need re-educating on the definition of a sub bass?!

yeah man, you got it right...
I usually have another synth with the sub bass LPF'd and mixed
I used to try to get the punch and proper rumble from the same synth thats running my talking or wobbling bass but screw that.
edit: and myspace will screw up your mixdown

What do you do with the wobble to ensure it doesn't clash with your sub?!
modulating sub bass with LFO can be disasterous!
and I often have the sub bass follow the wobbler note for note (this can get tricky with portamento, etc...)
in order to get it to not clash with the wobble, I use a relatively transparent sine and like I said low pass it so all you hear is -40 or -50hz
mix it so it doesn't intefere with the main bass. If you havent gone crazy with semitones or 5ths or anything... it should work.
what you want s a physical backing to the main bass, so try and make it seem as if it's one sound

none of us write the music we do just for other producers, "normal" people get a kick out of it too, and can still talk about it. He might be talking out of his ass, but, well, I'm not a director and I can still talk about what I like and don't like about movies

I already said I'd got my satisfaction from this thread, didn't need your input.
Now obviously I know people other than producers listen to music. The fact is I had ONE person saying about this and wanted producers feedback on the matter, not stnuc feedback, producers feedback.
Next time I post a thread, save yourself from replying.
