Illbient

Post by whitelight » Mon Apr 27, 2009 8:31 am

'sup!

Just discovered Illbient. This is definitely a very interesting kind of music. However, all I've been able to find is a couple of tracks by Byzar, Spooky and Spectre.

Anyone have recommendations of illbient artists, and tips on how to get their music?

Both Single Cell Orchestra and Freaky Chakra were pioneers of the sound in the mid nineties, You'll find Single Cell Orchestra tunes from that era on Astralwerks and Reflective Music.
Funny enough I've been working on Single Cell's new album for Cyberset Music later this year and he's totally bringing his Illbient sound back in a big way.

Ive never heard freaky chakara or single cell described as illbient. I think I heard those names on an early trip hop comp but If I remember right those names could more accuratelly be labelled as electro and big beat. if i remember right.

really if youre looking for illbient. start with the wordsound and asphodel labels. also agriculture, baboon (was that their name? prof shehabs label?)... hmm colorfield and spook have or had labels. BSI maybe... soot... mutant something or another... the electric ladyland comps... subharmonic had some releases. axiom.

wow i just reread that thing about single cell.... really? the only album i heard was electro. i guess if he says he's illbient, why not...

as is by we, is one of my fav illbient records or ebn e synch, and they dont sound like stereotypical illbient either.

also peek karl records out of germany, for some new exp illbient styles. maybe DL44 or 299 for some hip hop illbient type styles. whats that label that dub gabriel is on? or dr.israel...

never knew astralwerks to release any illbient. maybe mille plateaux?

You're right about Freaky Chakra being a little more on the Trip Hop end of things, even an early version of Bigbeat in some of his tracks, but Single Cell was one of the first artists I remember the phrase ever being coined for, he is well known for Ambient works too, as well as his electro-bass, but he composed and DJ'ed Illbient since 1993, weirdly enough though, his new 'Illbient' is more Illbient now than much of what was out in the nineties, one of the new tracks is one he dug up from the past decade, it's the kind of stuff that helped inspire a lot of the west coast midtempo breaks / wonky scenes that are now flourishing.

BTW sorry no links provided , because I could not find the old stuff on Reflective and Astralwerks online, the stuff on Reflective was supposed to be going onto Beatport, but is not there now. I don't know what's up with old Astralwerks stuff as much of it seems to have disappeared and never gone fully digital despite being owned by EMI.

I'll post links to the new stuff once it's done.

single cell was on a trip hop comp but that was before the genre was well defined. i mean, he wasnt on macro dub infection, or valis, or something that might be considered proto illbient. if you check single cells own web site you see ELECTRO or (if you look at freaky chakrah, DARK TECHNO). single cell reminds me of early plastic man if (plastic man) was more mainstream and had better production value. maybe i remember FSOL type ambience? hmm i could maybe see that guy getting down on a land of baboon comp if he made a move back in the day... ANyhow, homie has skills. I look forward to checking out his new work and seeing if its the electro that made him famous or him branching out to something new.

I have a few of those reflective EP's, they have lovely err, reflective hologram labels.

Got some stuff by Spacetime continuum, (Jonah Sharpe) which are beautiful ambient Techno and still on regular rotation. Although a lot of the output was more 'pure' ambient, i have got a couple of Single Cell Orchestra Ep's which are a variety of styles and genre's. I dunno about the FSOL likeness though, maybe that's just me. Maybe a bit more the first Amorphous Androdgynous LP.

All good though mind.

DJ Spooky is deffo 'Illbient' though, and more 'uneasy' listening than 'pretty' ambient.

yeah, dj spooky popularized the name. the boundries are somewhat ambiguous beyond that. depends on who you ask. critics tend to at least agree on the asphodel and wordsound labels. asphodel comes from a goth exp ambient drone direction and wordsound from a dub/hip hop/laswellish type direction. the newer asphodel ambient stuff is some nice dark drone work and the new wordsound is crazy noisy dubhop.
