Depends on what the intro's purpose is in the track.
If its supposed to introduce sounds and melodies before the bass drops, then longer intros are understandable.
If it is just a leader for the DJ to be able to grab the beat before all wobbly hell breaks loose, then shorter intros are in like flyn.
I am assuming the intro is everything that occurs before the 50hz starts making pant legs shake on the floor, btw.

i agree with the "it comes when it comes" ting...
most of my tunes are somewhere around the 32 mark...but most of the time i find its better not to be too conscious about the length...whatever feels right! plenty of tunes come in at 16, 20, 32 and 36...
or even that remix of richie spice's marijuana that has a 2 bar intro...
so i guess just go w/ the flow...screw the DJ
all my favourite producers have been making tunes with some annoying intro's to mix in for years...time for revenge

when i make a beat i start with a loop - 4 8 or 16 bars
when im happy with that loop ill loop the whole thing for 5-6 mins
then ill start muting stuff and come up with 4 or 5 seperate 32/16 bar loops
one of these will normally feel like an intro
so ill cut out the parts i like and make an intro out of them
then the rest of the tune will flow
as i dont make wobblaz or bangaz i dont really care about a big drop or making people go mad in the dance - its all about a nice drum groove and some sounds over the top to keep it interesting for the casual listener. real guys can listen to a drum loop and bassline and know the levels though.
