Super Heavy New BASSNECTAR Releases!
bassnectars shit is just stale. i say a lot of americans are out of the loop because lorin will drop some weak ass tune that sounds 5 years old and ppl lose it, where that shit just wouldnt fly at a more.. how would i say.. progressive(?) party.
there is some killer music coming states-side, dont get me wrong. im likely jsut pissed cuz last time assnectar came through it was a really shitty show. were the place not saturated with molly there would hardly have been anyone moving.

That was the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long while.
So .... Shambhala and Burning Man are not progressive parties.... yeah.... wtf.
I really can't believe he could put on a "shitty party"....I mean...I could understand that his music doesn't suit your tastes...but fuck...a shitty party?
When I saw him, there was about 3000 people rocking in the Village (one of the 6 different stages at Shambhala). More people than when Skream played (just before Bassnectar). It was almost impossible to enter the stage, and people were dancing even outside of the stage (the soundsystem of the Village is one of the most bass-heavy shit in the world, hehe).

great artist, great entertainer, .....but i will have to agree he's kinda stuck on repeat with his sound
he has great turnouts cause he has a following & has for yrs..... he was next level,,,but everyone else has caught up.....and mostly surpassed. and yes iv seen him live on a few of occasions (one of them being at shambala no less)throughout his career. I appreciate Bassnectar alot

I bet if you and I were sitting in a studio, and I played two new tracks that you never heard before, and you had to guess which one was from the UK and which was from the States, you'd get it right 50% of the time.thomasflorence wrote: I'm prob. going to get alot of shit for this statement, but I believe the UK crushes anything that comes from the States atm.
While I do see alot of stylized differences by location in younger genres of electronic music, I do not see alot of difference in production quality by location. If you have an opinion on style thats fine, everyone does.
As a side note, there is alot more support for electronic music in the UK. Most everything in the states right now is underground unless its guns, bitches, and bling.

Bassnectar is a fuckin badman, Lorin is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and rocks a show harder than most.
He's been wobbling for years, lfo programming didn't just appear through dubstep it's been implemented since the 70's within electronic music.
Bassnectar has been and still is one of the most important artists pushing bass music around the globe, probably something that should be recognised and respected and not the subject of snidey playground comments.

So the prefered music sub genre changes once every three days in one part of the world when it changes once every five days in another part of the world, and changing faster is being ahead of the curve?
Thats like saying that everyone who explored the amen break for 15 years was out of the loop for 12 of those years. Well, its over guys, sorry you all suck now, move along.
The counter point to that is that there is a difference between exploring and refining a certain sound -vs- jumping on it for the 10 minutes it is popular and jumping off it once its "over".
Refining -vs- straight up change, no?

totally agree with the statement abovecollective wrote:Bassnectar does what he does, and he is great for crossover jamband kids that are sick of seeing the same lame phish/cheese/bisco/tribe jam over and over. Its really easy for said kids to dig into a bassnectar show at a jamband festival.
He does what does well and he has a huge following.
Not my thing at all, but i can see the attraction for people that don't listen to a lot of electronica.

Well, this is already closer to reality than stating he puts "shitty parties". But once again, he always "tacked some wobz on his tunes".all i want is lorin to challenge himself in the studio to create some new and interesting things rather than jumping on this dubstep bandwagon and tacking some wobz on his tunes. hes an ace producer and (when he feels like it) rowdy DJ. i just think he can do better.
Will have to agree though that his new stuff isn't as good as what's on Mesmerizing the Ultra and Underground Communications.
Totally disagree...collective wrote:

Lorin got a huge following 'cause he is mixing lots of different elements from lots of different styles. Maybe kids in jamband festivals dig him, but he's also one of the prefered artists at the biggest rave in Canada (wich also got lots of underground music).
And I listen to a whole lot of electronica...probably got more diverse tastes in music than a majority of people on this forum. Been through experimental electronics, breakcore, ambient, psytrance, drum-n-bass, industrial, IDM, glitch-hop, electro, ethno-tech, noise, trip-hop, dubstep and lots of others (and that's just "electronica). Still, I like Bassnectar 'specially cause he doesn't really fit in an all-made category

Only heard one tune, that remix of last night. And that was wicked.
Give me a jungle or garage beat and admit defeat.

he doesn't make idm, he makes mid-tempo breaks and wobble dubstep. He is one of the most classifiable DJs / Producers on the planet.
Also, playing the biggest rave in canada doesn't mean he is pushing the scene or boundries of sonic exploration in the slightest.
I don't see him playing at the only real boundry pushing festival in canada (quite possible one of the most forward thinking festivals in the world)... that being:
MUTEK
and i am talking about spiritual forward thinking ( a la burning man and the like) i am talking about changing the face of music.
Thank you, I knew someone in the know had to feel me out on this one.FSTZ wrote:totally agree with the statement abovecollective wrote:Bassnectar does what he does, and he is great for crossover jamband kids that are sick of seeing the same lame phish/cheese/bisco/tribe jam over and over. To be honest, he plays to a crowd that doesn't know any better. Mind you he does a great job, and the people that go and listen to him don't really care.

He uses ableton and plays mainly his own music.
As for Mutek, I'll go to one of the nights wich are coming soon in Montreal. They got Appleblim, Mala and Deadbeat. Looks good.
But a festival that pushes YOUR favorite musical style doesn't mean it's more forward thinkin' than any other. Shambhala is great because it mixes lots of different styles and there's big names as well as close to unknown artists. This year, they got Heyoka and Spiral Architects, as well as Sub Swara....looks good as hell.
Collective, did you listen to both Mesmerize the Ultra and Underground Communications? I know he doesn't make IDM, but he takes some elements of it, as well as chill-out music, glitch and hip-hop and blah blah blah. His morning set at Shambhala was some really nice chill-out dubby psychedelic downtempo breaky stuff.
And as I said...he did "wobble" bass way before it got popular.
And well....tell me this is wobble bass dubstep:

I have heard all of bassnectars stuff and I have seen him about 9 or 10 times by chance. he seems to be everywhere, does a great job of promoting himself.
You are right he sometimes plays some downtempo / jamband styled trip-hop. (you can lump in what you call, ethno-tech, glitch, hip-hop etc etc.)
As for MUTEK, to be honest I don't really like all the music there. But its a festival tailored to the music industry. Thats why a majority of the people that go are there are label owners/producers etc. It is a haven for boundry pushing ideas and music especially with the academic side of the festival.
I don't see people people at Shambhala (while I am sure its fun and spiritual forward thinking) taking symposiums on utlizing Max/Msp and assorted other cutting edge forms of audio/visual synthesis.
I don't think Robert Henke would be performing at shambhala, because he is more of an academic. End fact is that Shambhala has its own draw but don't think it cannot come close to touching the intellectual side of a festival like Mutek. There are just glaring differences, some of the smartest minds in the electronic world will be sharing their art and ideas with the audience at Mutek and its not just about rocking a crowd (infact thats nothing to do with what its about).
Go to Shambhala to party, Go to MUTEK to learn is all i am saying.
PS: Yes, deadbeat is going to thrash it!
