Digital Download Shopping Carts?

Post by bowzer » Sat May 09, 2009 11:03 pm

Hey Im looking into setting up a digital download site for a label, but I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions of what shopping cart software would be best for selling mp3s?

I've seen some shopping host companies that have packages, but its like +$20 for 20 items a month... thats not very much. We'd probably need at least 100.

Dunno if this is the right forum for this questions but oh well!

Is it a dubstep label? Because IMO with this scene people are accustomed to buying mp3's off if the usual distro sites with beatport sitting on top. If you could set something up with no monthly cost it might be worth it but honestly I would doubt you would sell enough to cover the dollar per item. But yeah I would talk to Jeekoos or maybe Dopelabs. My site I just link my entries straight to the vendors, honestly it is really difficult to get traffic on official websites these days.

Are you sure it's really really reliable?

well all the plugin does is pass the info of whats added to the cart, on to paypal... paypal handles all the credit card and payment shit, and then after its confirmed, the plugin detects that, and sends out an encrypted download link to the user.

seems pretty good to me?!

although nothing is ever 100% perfect!

Seems legit, but trusting a 3rd party to go between you and paypal with sensitive info like credit card numbers is serious business.

I could go on about nerd security stuff forever, but if you're setting it up yourself and you don't know how to check if credit card numbers are being encrypted, deleted once the transaction is completed, unsafe characters are being escaped and a host of other shit like that, you could get yourself in hot water quick. Setting up a blog is one thing, setting up a payment system without and web developing knowledge is risky.

Two that seem good and are used a lot are authorize.net and chronopay.

They both charge a percentage of each transaction.

I hear that for real

Dopelabs (the master of all things internet) helps with my site, so I am sure he can let me know if this is a "responsible" program to use.

this plugin never takes any information from you besides what you want to buy... the credit card information is done on the paypal side. i dont see where it could possibly become a risk

Like I said, it seems legit. However, getting a web developer friend to help you install and configure it for a few bucks is worth it.

When you're dealing with databases and user input there's always a possibility for douche bags to sql inject your database and take/delete information, steal tunes without paying for them, etc.

It's probably fine for your uses, but I work in this field and know how easy it is to overlook something small that can turn out to be huge. Especially if you don't know what you're looking for in the first place. Wordpress is pretty solid and if they intergrated properly it shouldn't be an issue. I'm just overly cautious.

I recommend setting up an account with a store that's already established.
were about to change dubfrontrecords.com to links to stores instead of selling tunes ourselves.
fyi.
