ACP049: Mad EP - Twenty-four Breakbeats

Matthew Peters (aka Mad EP) has been influenced by Bach's 'Well-Tempered Klavier' and Shostakovich's '24 preludes and fugues' for years, and so decided to do something similar for the breakbeat.

Like Bach & Shostakovich, originally the project was supposed to be a composition exercise to compose a breakbeat in every major & minor key, but soon it really hooked him and he ran with it, trying to offer as much diversity as he could while still having the group make sense as a whole.

Presented free of charge by Mad EP & Acroplane_Recordings.

Nice one- I didn't write any fugues on this one.. heheh, come to think of it, I haven't written a fugue in ages. Might be worth giving it a go again.

They aren't tuned in the sense that I didn't 'pitch' the drum hits. They are a wide variety of breaks- ranging from fully developed songs for some, others are brief reflections. Some have full melody, basslines, etc... others are simple chords.

As the press sheet states- I started it as an exercise, but really got into the idea as I progressed in the project. I wanted to find as many ways to be expressive with a breakbeat as I could and still have a general coherence to the collection.

It's actually a direct rip from the Peters Edition Publishing house... All their sheet music has that cover...

Yeah Alphacat-

Creative Commons... I'm not making any money off it, so as long as no one else is (and credit is given, obviously) all is cool to share, spread and play as you see fit.

I'd love to hear people use em for blends with acapellas in dj mixes, etc.

my mate i mentioned above taught me loads of cool compositional techniques - try writing a tune with just 3 notes, no more than 3 instruments etc.... really interesting and makes you think well differently.

deffinitely worth gving a go.

A fugue is super simple, just some rules (i forget now) but well suited to repetative beats/acid....

you hear the ceefax acid 'prelude in 303 major? awesome. Bach (i think) done by on 303s...

(yup, bach)
